Johannesburg - A total of 154 candidates have been appointed as district magistrates across the country, 90 of them are women, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said on Saturday.

He said the number of female appointments represented 59% of all appointed candidates. This was revealed in a statement released after the cabinet's meeting on Wednesday.

He said the current statistics of magistrates in the country were a positive step towards achieving racial and gender transformation in the sector.

"The fact that 141 of the magistrates are black and 13 are white will significantly improve the racial and gender transformation of the lower courts," Radebe said.

A total of 211 magistrates have been appointed so far this year. On February 2 57 regional magistrates were appointed.

Radebe said the number of appointments thus far were unprecedented.
