Johannesburg - A 91-year-old man died on Monday afternoon when three cars collided on the K43 between the N12 and Nirvana Drive, Johannesburg metro police said.

"One person has died and four others are injured," Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed.

"For now, motorists should be aware that the road is closed and should use the Golden Highway and Midway interchange as alternative routes."

One of the injured, a child, was airlifted to Milpark Hospital.

"The other three people were a mother and her two children. They've been taken to Len Med," he said.

"The extent of the injuries we cannot confirm at this stage."

The 91-year-old was a passenger in one of the cars, Minnaar said.

The driver of one of the cars, believed to be a woman, is thought to have left the scene prior to the arrival of the metro police.
