96-year-old and gardener killed

2012-10-07 14:33

Mahikeng - A 96-year-old woman and her 55-year-old gardener were found dead in her Klerksdorp house, North West police said on Sunday.

Captain Amanda Funani said the bodies of Elizabeth Louw and Gert Marks were discovered in Louw's house in Wilkopies on Saturday afternoon by her friend.

"It is alleged that both victims were suffocated and strangled. The old woman was tied with shoe laces on her feet and arms before she was killed," Funani said in a statement.

"The perpetrators fled the scene with the deceased's jewellery and an undisclosed amount of money."

Funani said Louw's sister became suspicious when she did not answer or return her calls.

No one was arrested and investigations were continuing, Funani said.

...and another. Why tie a 96 year old up with shoe laces only to then suffocate and strangle her? This makes me furious! my sincere condolences to the families!

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-10-07 15:08

      Why? maybe because they're cowards?

  • ben.spreeth - 2012-10-07 14:47

The death penalty for savage people in an uncivilised country is the only way to stop this senseless killing of innocent people.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-10-08 14:59

Shoot me down for this but we all have to die somehow and generally don't get to choose if it is from crime, cancer or in our sleep. Personally I'd sooner go too soon than too late and if I had to choose between a lifethreatening degenerative disease or being snuffed out by someone like this I'd opt for the latter. Horrible for the relatives but how often have you watched someone dying slowly and with no dignity over a long period while others make money out of hope for a cure. This is a random thing just like a taxi accident in which breadwinners are both maimed and killed in multiples. Think of the suffering of their families.

      Mike Lamb - 2014-05-19 07:54

@ Gail H-B: Rather than coming across as a bit of philosophy, yours is the most callous comment I have read in some time. Do you think the old lady's last thoughts were "well this has to be better than dying of cancer". The gardener probably had many years left ahead of him too.

  • sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-10-07 14:47

What a terrible act! Couldn't they have just taken what they wanted and spared their victims's lives? What happened to compassion and mercy? Why kill them, they posed no threat...

      johan.jacobs.5680 - 2012-10-07 14:58

Their downfall they was possesed something.

      ben.spreeth - 2012-10-07 15:02

It would seem as though some people get a kick out of killing.

  • buti.lembe - 2012-10-07 14:51

It's what they always dream to commit such heinous act? killing a 96 years old person it's like killing a newborn baby. This is what we call freedom?

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-10-07 15:31

Freedom..no...perhaps tradition...why rape a 10 month old baby? Or blame the deaths of 45 people on the fact that a rabbit was killed. I'm sorry but i cant answer your question. Perhpas you should ask the Malema.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-10-07 21:46

@jack.blacking.56 - This is not tradition at all, but I see that indoctrination continues to work well. This is the biggest, unacknowledged crisis, our country faces. A mental-health crisis. Our public health care system is woefully inadequate as it is, but when it comes to mental health, our understanding and treatment is as unevolved as the very behaviour we condemn.

  • ChrisHolloway - 2012-10-07 15:18

It is so sad that Jaap Marais, Hendrik Verwoerd, Andries Treurnicht, and so many other hated people were so right about the way the ANC would lead the country, and what it would become.

      george.outremer - 2012-10-07 16:08

@Muziwandile.twala - I do not follow your reasoning / logic. Not sure either whether I agree with the first part of Chris Holloway's argument. I do however agree that the ruling party has failed all citizens of the republic in combating crime - especially crime against soft targets such as women, children and the elderly. Criminals have no respect for life; and government does not care enough to do anything about it - if they do have a plan, then their plan is a closely guarded secret.

time to revisit bringing the death penalty back. this country is literally being over run by these hooligans and its time they paid the ultimate price for their crime.

  • jameslarhu - 2012-10-07 15:35

    Savagery indeed!!!

  • kombisa.mbakaza - 2012-10-07 15:35

Oh Lord Almighty!!! What has this beautiful country became, we unfortunately read of one atrocity to the other. All these heinous crimes affect us mentally, financially, emotionally and otherwise. I can't help but wonder for how long is this havoc gonna reign. I wish the law enforcement agencies would bring these culprits to book for them to be sent away for a prolong period of time. May their soul rest in peace.

      fifi.stewart.71 - 2012-10-07 17:05

yes kombisa only Lord Almighty can help us. most of the people who are commtting these murders were not even born during apartheid. There is something very wrong in our society when we condemn murders but not abortions...same thing.

      willem.louw1 - 2012-10-07 17:50

Kombisa, we do not want them arrested, we want them dead!!!!!!

Are these predators been controlled by evil - for how do they know when and where to strike apart from 'inside' information. Beware of creatures 'under the hood' hanging around your neighborhood.

  • mzuvukile.maswana - 2012-10-07 16:05

Really South Africa! Is this the respect our elders deserve in this democrasy? Raping and murdering 90 year old. This has no colour as all races are affected by such attrocities. What have we become as this country? We chase to be recognised internationally yet our own backyard is rotten with such crimes.

  • martijn.slager.9 - 2012-10-07 16:34

Orchestrated evil, there is no other explanation for the continuous murdering of innocent citizens if this country.

  • kseafield - 2012-10-07 19:54

So glad in not in SA anymore.

      rude.awakning - 2012-10-07 20:06

kseafield! 5 of us left for safety reasons. In the 1st year 3 has experienced crime in their new found homes abroad, i am back and the rest by the end of the year. I hope you will have a different experience! As for me ....So glad to be back!

  • rude.awakning - 2012-10-07 20:01

sincere condolences to the families of the deceased! Truely sad, heartless and senseless! I hope that the killers are tracked down, caught and sentenced! down with crime, down! Make criminals pay!

  • PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-10-07 20:10

I cannot fathom the amount of hate someone must be consumed with in order to kill someone else. I can sort of understand (but obviously not condone) crimes of passion, where the victim is known to the perpertrator, but this kind of mindless killing is simply mind-boggling. I wish someone could explain it to me (in non-racist terms).

  • john.mahlahlane - 2012-10-07 20:15

Is this how democracy should be? Then it's worse than apartheid.Bring back the hangman's noose if you wish to end this madness.

These sub species should be slaughtered in public on television, then hopefully brain cells will react and the visuals of their destiny will deter future crimes

  • tebogo.makaneta - 2012-10-08 00:45

South Africans not a single day goes by without reading about murder. Only God can save us from all this evil. Lets all confess our sins and join each other in prayer.

  • gail.hayesbean - 2012-10-08 14:52

Sad - may their souls rest in peace and the gardeners family not go hungry. These killings are so futile and pointless and motivated by greed and illiteracy and fear of being discovered. Cowardly idiots commit this kind of murder. They probably did the old lady a favour anyway as living to such a ripe age means seeing your children die before you do as well as all your own contemporaries. It's lonely being 96 - I have a 90 year old Mom and I know she would like to go in her sleep but we don't get to choose sadly. At least it wasn't cancer that costs and hurts a whole lot more or Muscular Dystrophy or Elephant Man disease or some other incurable degenerative disease. Losing your independence and dignity is IMO way more painful emotionally and we are not allowed to assist people who are suffering to pass on because it is breaking the law. Obviously the person should be of sound mind and make that decision for themselves and where they are either incapable of doing so or recovering then those who are responsible for their care should be allowed to make the decision on their behalf.
