2012-08-20 10:33

Johannesburg - A total of 99 people have been arrested for drunk driving in Johannesburg this weekend, metro police said on Sunday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, "45 were arrested on Friday in Ennerdale. 35 were arrested in Alexandra on Saturday. And also on Saturday another three were arrested near Croesus cemetery."

"Another 16 were arrested in Parkview on Sunday night."

Minnaar said all those arrested were taken to the alcohol evidence centre, in Johannesburg at the metro police department where their blood was drawn.

After their blood was drawn, those arrested were detained at various police stations.

"They were released on bail, which ranged from R500 to R1 500," said Minnaar.

All of those arrested were expected to appear in various courts soon.

Why does bail range from R500 - R1500? Were they not all arrested for the same offence, and should therefore, pay the same bail?

Bail doesn't work like that. A bail amount depends on the person concerned as well as the offence. Its essentially an amount deemed to be enough so as to guarantee the person returns for their court date.
