Deaths in police custody drop - IPID

2013-03-06 14:51

Johannesburg - Deaths in police custody or as a result of police action have decreased, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Wednesday.

“The IPID has noted the various incorrect figures of deaths in police custody, and deaths as a result of police action, being bandied about in the media," said spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

"Although the numbers are still unacceptably high, they have come down considerably over the last four years."

IPID's annual report indicated that there were 720 fatal incidents in the 2011/12 financial year, said Dlamini.

"This was a decrease of 10% compared to 2010/11."

He said 232 of all fatalities were deaths in police custody, while 488 were as a result of police action.

So f@kin what. There is NOT suppose to be any deaths in custody.

      Tums Down - 2013-03-06 16:27

I think we should split the crime stats - Crimes committed by civilians - Crimes committed by Police ** I wonder which has more growth?

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2013-03-06 17:29

@ Mandy 2008/09 a total of 912 people died in SA Police custody 2009/10 a total of 860 people died in SA Police custody 2010/11 a total of 797 people died in SA Police custody 2011/12 a total of 720 people died in SA Police custody 1963/1990 a total of 73 people died in SA Police custody(almost 30 yrs) 2.6 people annually during the "Apartheid" years

      bullet.proof.9400 - 2013-03-06 18:02

And under the apartheid government if it reached 2 PA it was a lot... so much for freedom. kill, kill, kill, murder, murder, what a lovely place SA has become with the criminal anc in charge

  • rato.lekhula - 2013-03-06 15:00

And thats supposed to make it better???

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2013-03-06 16:49

73 people died while in Police detention during 1963 to 1990, which equates to 2.6 people annually during the "Apartheid" years. For the period 2008 to 2009 a total of 912 people died while in SA Police custody. Yet the old SA police were accused of being brutal and inhumane, no one has ever said a single word about what's been happening since the ANC took control of South Africa?

      Hein Huyser - 2013-03-07 06:25

Indeed! What a shame. It is supposed to be zero deaths in this community service

  • chazfury - 2013-03-06 15:02

Really? Who're they trying to BS!

      Hein Huyser - 2013-03-07 06:26

Then again, we have no reliable stats on crime, how can we believe this stats from saps to be reliable? SAPS and anc can not be trusted anymore.

  • JannieDeVos - 2013-03-06 15:02

    You could have fooled me...

  • Sas Kloppers - 2013-03-06 15:04

There should have been NO deaths in Police custody!

  • John - 2013-03-06 15:06

Blah blah.....nice try at a cover up!

  • zelda.matthews - 2013-03-06 15:08

      Tersia Louw - 2013-03-06 15:23

In cold blood and in public.

  • david.luis.9822924 - 2013-03-06 15:12

One is already too many! the Police is supposed to "serve and protect" not to murder people!!!!!!!!!

      Hein Huyser - 2013-03-07 06:27

Nice community protection we have here. Its time to fire them all

  • Emma Strydom - 2013-03-06 15:12

  • Sheryl Ashby - 2013-03-06 15:16

What?......Since last week? Contrary to Government belief, we're not ALL morons!

  • John Smith - 2013-03-06 15:16

1 death is too many from our so called PROTECTORS!

  • brendan.healey.315 - 2013-03-06 15:20

I'm now living in the UK and there are over 60 million people on this small island... a lot of them being RAF (Rough as f..k)but there are Zero deaths in Police custody. 720 deaths is 700 deaths more than deaths here due to any crime never mind in Police custody !

      Colleen Erasmus - 2013-03-06 15:37

      You dealing with civilised people!

  • evert.meyer.98 - 2013-03-06 15:31

If one looks at the results of police work it seems you have as much chance of dying due to police than being found guilty of murder.

  • tuwanir - 2013-03-06 15:36

The vex question is, Have our policemen/women turned into criminals or Do we have criminal elements in the service?

  • Dan - 2013-03-06 15:37

I wonder whats worse, posting a truthful comment or being censored by News 24 and their thought police????

  • Badger - 2013-03-06 15:39

WTF ???? There should be NO deaths in police custody, trying to sweeten the BS by saying they have decreased is absolute BS over and over.

  • Zukie G Gilman - 2013-03-06 15:41

sick...!are there suppose to b any??

  • criticallyhonest - 2013-03-06 15:41

In the late nineties the stats show about 100 per year. Even that is too high. Who are these guys trying to kid....? So again today a few lines from Tom Wolfe's I am Charlotte Simmons.... They’re all busy fighting smoke. Everybody seems to think that if the smoke is gone, therés no more fire. And you wanna know why nobody tries to extinguish the fire? Nobody’s supposed to see the fire nomore.

      Dan - 2013-03-06 16:31

@criticallyhonest.........but our lives were very bad under the apartheid regime were they not ?

      criticallyhonest - 2013-03-06 17:21

Dan...late ninety's is already 4 or 5 years with anc government. Now, apartheid was never going to be sustainable because it disempowered and aliented so many people. So yes, it was not good....but I ask most sincerely, is what we have to endure today good?

  • Colleen Erasmus - 2013-03-06 15:46

Its a cover up to look good in the international world! I honestly don't believe and never will believe that statistics given to us are a true reflection of what is really happening. Has crime, really, come down, I THINK not it's on the increase! Hmm I once phoned 10111 to report a incident, they took almost 20 minutes to answer and then asked for the address and they asked me where it was in the area! DOF is an understatement! In Australia, the police cars have cameras, onboard computers, so if u driving they put in your plate number and it will immediately give them all your details! If we had to do that here, hmm the computer will disappear! They only have the police for no traffic department and they are so helpful and effecient and have always been friendly! Fast difference between our police and there's!

  • doug.evans.56863 - 2013-03-06 15:57

you have to get to jail before you can die there ...

      Marc Ross - 2013-03-06 16:39

There are thousands of wrongful arrests a year. Should these people die, or be subject to rape. Why not have CCTV cameras in cells, linked to external monitors. Just think if your teenage son is arrested and thrown in a cell with hardened criminals or brutal police.

  • Busisani Mhlambi - 2013-03-06 15:58

Where is the news here? How can you celebrate the fact that you doing your job less wrong than you did last year. You should actually be fired for doing it wrong coz you are getting paid for doing it right.

  • Trudie Menezies - 2013-03-06 16:02

It is an outrage! One death in police custody is one too many! It just should not happen! What is wrong with society? You really think it is better because it is less than the previous year? Really???? Out of controll, the whole country and their policing ass well!

  • anton.coetzee.5 - 2013-03-06 16:02

Yip, the police drag them to death before the get to custody.

  • Hemlock - 2013-03-06 16:14

Trying to pull the wool over our eyes?

  • jungleboy - 2013-03-06 16:33

1 death is 1 TOO many! 720 wow, that exactly 2 a day. good going.

  • jaco.skalkwyk.3 - 2013-03-06 16:38

  • Richard - 2013-03-06 17:55

  • Domkonto Wesieswe - 2013-03-06 22:33

  • Jim - 2013-03-06 22:51

If stopped at a road block or pulled over I would be terrified.....are these cops genuine or part of the blue light crooks...SA and its "police srervice" has simply gone horibly wrong, an absolutle shambles. I doubt its bottomed out yet......worse to come or be revealed.....

  • Jim - 2013-03-06 22:59
