National police commissioner Riah Phiyega is in trouble in Parliament because she allegedly sent a text message to a DA MP.

The MP, Dianne Kohler Barnard, told the parliamentary portfolio committee on police today that she received the text message from an unknown number last Thursday night after she commented on police matters on television.

The SMS says: “I am black, proud and capable and, get it clear, you can take nothing from me. Eat your heart out. I am not made by you and cannot be undone by you. Riah Phiyega.

Kohler Barnard alleged that the message was sent from Phiyega’s cellphone.

“I find it absolutely appalling that a national police commissioner would choose to send me a personal message because I do my job, while she failed to do her job. I sense a threatening tone here.”

ANC MP Leonard Ramatlakane said if the message had come from Phiyega it would send a “certain message to thousands of police officers about us [Parliament].”

Another ANC MP, Livhuwani Mabija, said: “If the message is really from her, where does she get the audacity to do that?”

Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale, national police spokesperson, did not immediately respond to a request to confirm whether the number belonged to Phiyega.

Media24 phoned the number, and an unidentified person said that the number belonged to Phiyega but that she wasn’t available to take phone calls.

Chairperson of the police committee, Francois Beukman, instructed Gauteng police chief Lesetja Mothiba to urgently establish whether the number belonged to Phiyega and give the committee feedback tomorrow.

The police committee meets tomorrow to consult on the Farlam commission of inquiry’s Marikana report. This report contains damning findings against Phiyega, including that she was dishonest during her testimony before the commission.
