“I can’t win the World Cup on my own.”

This was the desperate plea yesterday of an upset AB de Villiers to his Protea team mates after a second shock defeat in the tournament in less than two weeks, according to a report by Eduan Roos in Sunday’s Rapport.

The South Africans lost by 29 runs (according to the Duckworth-Lewis system) to a struggling Pakistan. Earlier in the tournament the Proteas were taken to the cleaners by India and lost by 130 runs in Melbourne.

De Villiers was the top-scorer in the South African innings with a courageous knock of 77. His team were bowled out in just over 33 overs for 202.

“I hate it to lose and at the moment I have nothing positive to say about the team. Although I scored a few runs, I am also disappointed in myself.”
