ACDP: Men must change attitudes about women

2012-12-09 18:34

Johannesburg - The ACDP has called on men to protect women against violence.

"Violence against women is largely perpetrated because men regard women as possessions and sexual objects," African Christian Democratic Party MP Steve Swart said in a statement on Sunday.

"It is this attitude which must change," he said. "Men can play the most active part in preventing violence against women.

"This is not a women's issue, it is a man's issue. VAW [violence against women] is interlaced with gender equality, and deeply ingrained in the attitudes of men."

Swart was commenting at the close of the 16 days of activism against gender violence.

During the ACDP's Vikiela [isiZulu for protect] campaign, it had highlighted 16 issues relating to violence against women, said Swart.

These include: trafficking, sexual harassment, child abuse, sugar daddies, abuse by teachers, substance abuse and VAW, HIV/Aids as a result of VAW, prostitution, domestic violence, corrective rape, rape by male nurses, ukhuthwala [abduction and forced marriage of girls who are frequently under-aged], rape and prison rape.

"Good men need to speak up every time they hear a woman being disrespected, objectified and violated even by words," said Swart.

"We can no longer enshrine a patriarchal culture nor condone violence with attitudes at the expense of our women."

The so called holy book is violent towards women. And some christians claim violence is wrong. Stop being hypocrites. Violence is wrong in every angle but a christian to say that is just unlogical. Teach people critical thinking and scrap all religion!

I wonder how people in their sane minds keep up with this, or maybe they are not so sane after all!

I have gotten a Better Idea for you, atheitis (I must say the name sounds rather like a disease than a position). Why don't you get intellectually honest and stop quote mining the Bible, and start actually studying it, before making theologically illiterate statements? Christians have answered such straw-man articles long ago. http://creation.com/hoax-testimony-hoax-endorsement People looking at Christianity honestly and from a less bigoted point of view can easily see that the Bible is pro-woman. Just compare it with the supposed "Religion of Peace". Do you see Christian women wearing veils? Why do you not also quote the Bible where it explicitly says that the Lord's soul hate those who love violence Ps 11:5? Or is that too inconvenient for you?

Also, Atheitis, who is too much of a wimp to post under your own, real name, as well as Mr. UMvelase, tell me, why, under atheistic presuppositions, should men respect women? After all, according to atheistic philosophies, we are only a bag of blind and purposeless molecules, who came here via cruel dog eat dog processes over long periods of time. So a man hitting or abusing a woman is simply one bag of molecules interacting with another bag of molecules. All part of the universe's apathy. 'Right and wrong' is merely then, an illusion of you tiny mind.

First of all morality does not come with religion. Respect to be respected. To build a better place where everyone women shouldn't be treated like property. Everyone deserves to be treated equally, sadly some women don't think so, as they are the slaves of religion.

Hi I have a better idea, let's give every woman licensed firearm and teach them how to employ it effectively in a self-defense situation, and let's let everything sort itself out. My guess is many rapists will die and the ones left will be too dam scared to try and touch a woman. Woman are easy targets so changing that will be easier than trying to convince bad people to stop being ruthless inhuman thugs.

And for as long as we all insult one another, we have proved what?

If some South Africans support corruption and justify it by using race, tribe, class or pride, what hope in hell is there that violence in general would stop if some peoples ethics are so dysfunctional?

The way that women still suffer in many Countries is beyond belief. We are people too. So are some men living in this disgraced continent. They are few, and far between.

Why are you people changing this to a debate about religion, and quoting scripture? With more rapes in SA annually than in the DRC where rape was used as a war tactic, more rapes than the Libyan and Syrian civil wars, half a million of our children abused each year, an estimate cost of Violence Against Women at R10 Billion of our GDP, and only a 6 or 7% conviction rate, that is the message we need to be discussing here. HOw to end VAW! The governement needs to undertake large scale education programmes and start with our boys. If we can change mens attitudes towards women, perhaps we can see some change. Lets discuss this - rather than religion.
