Johannesburg - The death of Minister of Public Service and Administration Collins Chabane in a car accident would leave a void in the ANC and the government, the party said on Sunday.

"The African National Congress mourns the tragic and untimely passing of ANC NEC Member and Minister of Public Service and Administration, Comrade Collins Chabane and his two protectors, Sergeants Sekele and Lentsoane," said national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

"With his incisive mind, sharp wit and easy humour, Comrade Collins’ passing leaves a huge void in the ANC and Government."

Chabane, his driver and a body guard were killed instantly when a truck did a u-turn in front of their car on the N1 near Polokwane.

The accident happened at around 01:00 on Sunday.

Chabane was versatile and as at home playing a marimba as he was in the corridors of power, said Kodwa.

"We could talk about music, you could talk about sport, you could talk about politics... he was an all round cadre.

"Comrade Collins made an immeasurable contribution in the policy making processes... his groundbreaking work entrenched accountability and performance measurement as a [central] feature of the work of government."

Kodwa said Chabane was one of the most disciplined and loyal people of the ANC that he had ever come across.

"Most outstanding for me is we lost a loyal, dedicated and most disciplined member of the ANC," he said.

The ANC sent condolences to Collins' family, colleagues and friends.

"We wish them strength and courage during this difficult time of loss as they attempt to come to terms with the falling of a great baobab tree.

"Our thoughts and prayers are also with the families and friends of sergeants Sekele and Lentsoane," Kodwa said.

President Jacob Zuma was shocked by Chabane's death.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this untimely death of an outstanding cadre of our liberation struggle and a competent, accomplished and dependable member of my Cabinet," said Zuma.

"This is a huge loss to government and the country as a whole."
