ANC: Don't advertise with City Press

2012-05-25 12:04

Cape Town - The ANC has taken their fight with the City Press further by asking South Africans not to advertise in the newspaper.

This comes after the newspaper published the controversial painting of President Jacob Zuma with his penis hanging out.

The ANC has taken City Press and the Goodman Gallery, which is hosting the exhibition of which the painting was a part, to court to get them to remove the art.

Until they comply, "we will continue to call on all South Africans including all formations of civil society and democrats at large who share our sentiment on this issue to boycott the newspaper, cancel their subscriptions as we have done already and not to advertise in the City Press", the ANC said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the party said that it felt the SA National Editors’ Forum was being “inconsistent and opportunistic” after the body described the ANC 's call to boycott City Press as “abuse of power and intimidation”.

“In our past engagements with the organisation and other media formations, the issue of any party or formation withholding their buying power was accepted as an option where there is disagreement.

“As the ANC we are entitled to vote on this issue with the withdrawal of our buying power.”

The party said it viewed the call for a boycott of the newspaper as a “sensible and responsible option to continue engaging the newspaper”.

It said its call to boycott was a legal and legitimate way of registering its outrage at the “insult” directed at Zuma.

“We will do everything within the bounds of law to persuade the newspaper to accept the reality that we will not rest until this public display of arrogance is removed and a public apology [is] made.”

The painting, titled The Spear, has been removed from display at the gallery after two men defaced it on Tuesday.

The South Gauteng High Court on Thursday postponed the court case indefinitely.

The ANC is seriously overstepping its mark on this issue. City Press is NOT state owned. It CANNOT be dictated to. Build a bridge and get over it. It would be a sad, sad day for democracy if advertisers heed to this ridiculous call, as it would mean that we have moved backwards to a dictatorship.

      Average_Joe - 2012-05-25 12:20

      Joe - 2012-05-25 12:20

Agreed and if the ANC pay their bills in the same way the government departments do I'm quite sure the debtors department of City Press will be glad to hear this.

      Koos - 2012-05-25 12:20

I'm not concerned. Sheeple don't advertise.

      Poloyatonki - 2012-05-25 12:24

DONT BUY City Press... The New Age is the best.

      Kato - 2012-05-25 12:26

i disagree. how does that affect democracy. Its their democratic right to chose not to buy their paper. its more like a divorce, two parts have disagreed and they have a right to their separate ways. It would only affect democracy if they had banned it.

      Koos - 2012-05-25 12:27

New Age is so last year, full of ancESTORAL lies. No thanks.

      Freddie - 2012-05-25 12:27

What ANC cadre has control over advertising spend in private enterprise? None! Carry on City Press, the ANC's active members are mostly unemployed, semi-literate types. Not your average advertisers and readers.

      Christopher - 2012-05-25 12:28

If any advertisers heeds to this call, I will personally boycott the advertiser and not buy any of their products...remember who has most of the wealth advertisers!!

      Christopher - 2012-05-25 12:28

      New Age bullsh**!

      Freddie - 2012-05-25 12:28

State intimidation and attempted control of the press! Brings back memories of the National Party and the Rand Daily Mail, the more things change the more they stay the same. ANC=NATS

      Poloyatonki - 2012-05-25 12:29

Christopher..New Age is more African than City Press..

      JohnSloan - 2012-05-25 12:30

It amazes me that white people can scream at the top of their voices for transparency in govt/ but when people call for transparency in the system of white supremacy, or when the system of white supremacy comes under the microscope and racism is talked about, white people get very angry

      swmabotja - 2012-05-25 12:31

Just sent an email to, I need a quote for a classified ad. "Jesus is coming". They thought it wouldn't be this quick. PopCorn?

      Gerald - 2012-05-25 12:35

Come on Sharon, be fair. The ANC is nit talking in its capacity as government but as a political organisation. They are not even addressing you but their own constituents. Whether their gripe with city press is right or not is besides the point. I am not ANC but I happen to agree with their objection with CP. I will def. boycott the paper, that I had decided the moment I saw how polarising of our society that pic was.

      John - 2012-05-25 12:36

i agree with sharon and this story is getting blown right out of proportion anyway, zuma and all his cronies remain corrupt thieves.

      Freddie - 2012-05-25 12:37

New Age is nothing more than ANC propaganda.

      Fussed - 2012-05-25 12:37

Banana anyone?? @JohnSloan & Poloneydonkey... I have extra for you guys!!

      Eduard - 2012-05-25 12:42

The thing about newspapers are, they communicate/ print news and events. If the so called educated ANC leaders understand this process, they would move on!!!! I am just surprised that the masses can't see the similarities between the current ANC and the Zim government under Bob. SA stand the chance to lose even more that Zim. Come on guys, open your eyes please, before it is too late.

      James - 2012-05-25 12:48

1 years subscription to City Press paid for. R591.76 worth it in defence of freedom of speech.

      Christopher - 2012-05-25 12:52

Polo...Well that is why I will by City Press then...I don't want your kind of African thoughts in my life.

      Gerald - 2012-05-25 12:54

it will be like Zim if government intervenes. ANC is trying to protect African way of things. Freedom of expression must be within limits, lest it encroaches upon others' rights. Why is Zille taking Malema to court, wasn't he also exercising his freedom of speech. We all condemned Malema for the callous disrespect.

      Christopher - 2012-05-25 12:55

      @Johnsloan Howz your Mother?

City Press = Rand Daily Mail ANC = Nats The New Age = The Citizen Serious Dejavu, is this 2012 or 1979.

      HugoMabasa - 2012-05-25 13:25

yes its not,no one is dictating anything to city press,we are simply using our unique position in that city press was and is newspaper which targets the black middle class hence gov was their main client as well other black owned businsses. What we are saying is we are gatvol with having our dignity trampled in the name of freedom of expression.infact, this is freedom of expression.City press will continue to operate and I understand that a majority of whites will take up subscritions, but only city press stands to lose because sowetan is quietly standing in the shadows to take over business from their closest rivals. With whites taking up subscriptions, city press has to radically alter their content,I cant see whites enjoying an in depth interview with Trompies on their coming album!

      sekete.thabiso - 2012-05-25 13:40

Jackass Mthembu spoke without thinking, not that i m suprised anyway! What about CITY PRESS employees whom their salaries depend on this newspaper? Have you given thought to that you moron? Nxaaaa

      swmabotja - 2012-05-25 13:41

@Gerald... He said, and I Quote... "We will call on all South Africans...". Most of the Ads on City Press classifieds are Jobs. Now we know what they want us to stay away from, ask Pikoli.

      Andile - 2012-05-25 13:42

Sharon it's not a ridiculous call nor is the ANC overstepping its mark as you presume. The arrogance displayed by th editor shows utter disregard of the sensitivity around this matter. The call is spot on. Editors should take into consideration the cultural dynamics that characterise this diverse nation.

      Fussed - 2012-05-25 13:54

Cant destroy the country fast enough so they after one business at a time

      darryl.maze1 - 2012-05-25 13:58

Well this is what we will always expect from the corrupt ANC. They are always going to blow things out of proportion to get there own way and are always going to play the race card becaused they have braiwashed there ppl so much. This country is never going to move forward or become a rainbow nation so long as this corrupt ANC are running the country.

      swmabotja - 2012-05-25 13:59

@Fussed... they're not that good, they can't destory the corporate world, the corporations will destroy them instead. I saw that "Made in Palenstine" thing, somebody is roaming in 'Gaddafi' territory.

      francoisvanpeer - 2012-05-25 14:00

This is a gross missuse of politiacl power!!!These clowns need to grow up and face the reality that their little "painting" is nothing in comparison to their lies, corruption, thift, false promises, crime etc!!!!

      tony.wardle.75 - 2012-05-25 15:22

The ANC are really quite funny. They are upset about a painting that City Press didn't paint. They are upset about the fact that City press did their job and reported a fact. I saw the painting on the web, nothing to do with City press. They are pissed that City Press have the guts to do the right thing. Funny.... Next they are going ask the world to boycott the BBC, CNN and the rest??

      makhosazane.kubheka - 2012-05-25 15:49

But like any other newspaper - its main concern is the bottom line. Dont they know customer is KING and unlike Sunday Times, City Press has a large market in black communities that are offended by that painting. Aluta Continua!!!!!!!

      Bob - 2012-05-25 16:08

I think we should all boycot the ANC...!!!

      Vincent - 2012-05-25 16:57

@Collen. You are a total moron because you are unable to give reasons or evidence as to why Sharon is supposedly "stupid". See what I did there? I gave a reason. How about you learn from it, if you're capable of doing so.

      khuliso.ratshinanga - 2012-05-25 17:07

what dictorship are you talking about city press should have removed the painting on its web until the court procedings were completed instead they went on a defensive mode they adopted fight fire. city press should fire the editor in chief.

      Nicolaas - 2012-05-25 19:21

@Poliodonkey, or is it dickhead, can you actually read? Stop your idiot remarks, get of the baas laptop and go and clean the toilet as you suppose to do every Friday.

      Themba - 2012-05-25 13:01

No Carol, ANC is exercising its right to choose by choosing not to advertise in the newspaper. ANC members who are willing to support the call for boycott will also do so willingly.

It's all over the world already and even the first e-mail jokes have started to run worldwide. City Press did their job by publishing news worthy articles. I hope that City Press gets overloaded with advertisement offers.

Certainly boycotting is a means to an end. Time will tell whether it is effective and people buy into a boycott. Shouldn't the ANC rethink this statement: "will not rest until this public display of arrogance is removed and a public apology [is] made". If they were being honest, they perhaps have millions of apolgies to make to millions of South Africans they have failed, before they ask a newspaper to apologize over printing a picture. Many other national leaders around the world have been "insulted" in similar fashion, some even chose to lead rather than subvert freedom of press/expression and some even focus on governing instead of "ruling". worth a try maybe?? Often, though, politicians and their cadre divert (or try to) from reall issues, to ones that will divide, perhaps for centralizing power or maybe it is just plain old "arrogance".

  • Dave - 2012-05-25 12:27

  • wayne.jones.1422 - 2012-05-25 12:30

And the ANC says the dont bully other people.....makes you wonder

  • Freddie - 2012-05-25 12:31

The ANC must be really insecure to act in such an irresponsible manner. Keep it up DA, City Press and all free society. Don't let these would be communist dictators intimidate you.

      Nicolaas - 2012-05-25 19:48

Freddie, I wonder what the All National Criminals will do if the DA spends 50% of their marketing budget in City Press. Zille, please heed our call and start adverising in City Press?

  • Clive - 2012-05-25 12:31

Isn't this utterly pathetic?! Our country is stagnating economically, there is massive unemployment and no service delivery, crime and corruption are rife, and government's ineptitude is manifested daily. Yet the ANC is silent on these matters while immersing itself in side issues like advertising and an ugly painting. They really are the pits, totally unfit to govern.

  • dave.leverton - 2012-05-25 12:31

"It said its call to boycott was a legal and legitimate way of registering its outrage at the “insult” directed at Zuma." And what does the average citizen do to register their outrage at the daily insults from the ANC govt ?

  • lee.farrington - 2012-05-25 12:32

    Like spoilt little bratts

  • Henk - 2012-05-25 12:32

the only sensible and responsible option for all south africans who are democrats, will be NOT to vote for the anc anymore as they dont perform on what they promised!

  • netswera.livhuwani - 2012-05-25 12:33

Shut up, I remember Thabo Mbeki in days like these; he never told people what to do. Malema was right ANC is a bunch of dictators.

      Azande - 2012-05-25 14:00

and Zuma just told people what to do he?

  • Steve - 2012-05-25 12:33

I remember when the National Party got rid of the Rand Daily Mail in a similar way. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  • bridgette.allan - 2012-05-25 12:35

The ANC is arrogant beyond belief. ANC only believe in democracy as long as everything works in their favour. As soon as they are confronted by something that makes them uncomfortable , they resort to a dictator like tactics.

  • Timothy - 2012-05-25 12:35

Obviously the ANC does not understand how print advertising works. Since they asked everyone to boycott it, which has sparked more people interested in it, which means the City press can show better readership, it will mean more people will want to advertise due to large following.. therefore making the City Press a very good place to advertise, and if the City Press sets their prices right, it will also increase advertising... Surely you cannot tell people not to do something openly in Business.. For example Woolworths cannot tell everyone... 'Dont buy from Pick n Pay' City Press should take ANC to court over this.

      Charles-Bronson - 2012-05-25 13:11

      Pienaar - 2012-05-25 13:01

And I don't care about your sentiments....

      Jacqui - 2012-05-25 13:40

  • Sharon - 2012-05-25 12:37

The ANC will be telliong us soon what toilet paper we can use - please enough of this!!!

      alansmartSnr - 2012-05-25 19:37

...Hmm..another business opportunity.. Wonder how much it would cost to have a few thousand rolls of toilet paper with the original picture of Zuma printed on each page/sheet. Definately going to explore this. Will get my paper rolls from City Press if possible..and advertise this new fun trick in a quarter page advert from C.P.. man, I'll make a killing.

  • Antipoaching - 2012-05-25 12:38

Hopefully all sensible South Africans will now flood City Press with advertising....

  • andrew.martin.3766 - 2012-05-25 12:38

    This smacks of Berlin, 1939

  • Dirk - 2012-05-25 12:39

It is time for all South Africans to stop this immature childish behaviour. What about a call for all non ANC supporters to stop paying any taxes, levies, municipal accounts, VAT etc until this thieving children stops corruption at all levels. Lets stand together and stop paying any taxes and government levied fees. Lets see then what is left of our "INTERNATIONAL IMAGE" as our esteemed ANC SG says to hell with the West and our esteemed Finance Minister says not paying E-Toll to enrich another few select will also damage our reputation. It is now in every individuals hands to make a difference to get rid of this self enriching thieving corrupt children. Rather bring back Julius Malema - even if we don't like him he at least has triple the brainpower than any of these other morons currently running this government. VIVA SOUTH AFRICA VIVA JULIUS.

      julian.booyens - 2012-05-25 13:57
