Johannesburg - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has condemned an apparent arson attack in which five people died when their home was set alight.

"The ANC deplores the incident and we commend the police for having arrested five people in connection with the incident," the ANC said in a statement on Monday.

"We urge our law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are successfully prosecuted."

KwaZulu-Natal police said five people, aged between 19 and 36, were arrested on Sunday for allegedly setting fire to a home in Mbongolwane, near Eshowe, in which five people died.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said four houses in a homestead were set alight on Saturday night

Thulisile Mnyango, 50, Cebile Mnyango, 21, Lungelo Mnyango, 17, Mlamuli Mnyango, 10, and 2-year-old Qiniso Mnyango, died in one of the houses.

The motive for the attack was unknown.

He said the five were expected to appear in the Eshowe Magistrate's court on Tuesday on charges of murder.

The ANC in the province sent condolences to the Mnyango family.

"... The ANC calls on communities to refrain from using violence to resolve disputes as that creates unnecessary tensions among communities."

It urged people to strengthen the capacity of community policing forums in their areas to help prevent crime.
