ANC makes money on Mangaung

2012-10-28 10:49

Johannesburg - The ANC hopes to cash in at Mangaung with business people paying to rub shoulders with the party's elite, it was reported on Sunday.

Businessman Patrice Motsepe had already paid R500 000 to sit next to President Jacob Zuma, The Sunday Times reported.

According to the newspaper, other business people were paying between R25 000 and R350 000 to mingle with ANC heavyweights.

Major private sector companies had also already booked and paid for their seats the conference in December.

They included Absa, Standard Bank, FNB, Nedbank and Cell C.

ANC Progressive Business Forum co-convener Daryl Swanepoel told the newspaper the proceeds would go "towards offsetting the costs of the main conference".

Conference organisers expected about 750 guests to attend a banquet at the conference. According to media reports at the weekend, other funding would come from companies seeking exhibition space at the event.

Nothing is for free, they will except something in return. I just hope b&b's ask for cash before they stay otherwise they ill never see there money

      scouter.fourone - 2012-10-28 11:36

Imagine paying R500K to sit next to Zuma only to witness his demise first hand - now there would be irony at its best. On the other hand, that might be worth R500K come to think of it.......

Whats that old saying."A fool and his money are soon parted"

      bee.mthethwa - 2012-10-28 12:35

@lownbester remember Patrice is not a Nationalist, he is one of us. lol

      claudia.meads - 2012-10-28 13:19

Indeed, notably now that the ANC's key cash-cow - Muammar Gaddafi, is polishing pumpkins... Patrice Motsepe's greatest challenge is certainly not the R500 000, but rather how to reduce his IQ to room temperature, to be able to communicate with the illiterate sex-crazed goon from the stone-age, next to him - all of this just to do the necessary scouting first hand.

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-10-28 13:52

I hope this report is not true but if it is : Wow Patrice,i am very disappointed. I thought you were a role model but it is clear you just one of them .There are people you can create jobs or offer business loans to with that money buy you chose to use it to get a seat beside this man who has ruined South Africa. It will be written in history books that you were part of the problem. Shame on you man, shame on you.

  • SharonE - 2012-10-28 11:02

These business people don't regard the money they are spending as a "donation", rather they see it as an investment. They give money to the ANC party, in return for lucrative government tenders, with the initial donation factored into the tender price. They get the money back from the taxpayer! ANC = Win Company = Win Taxpayer = Lose (Again)

  • tony.vanniekerk.35 - 2012-10-28 13:05

Where does conflict of interest feature in this scenario. An insurer cannot even award a broker with a gift more than R1000 per year and the party running the country can receive R500 000 from someone who actively solicits business from them, the same people who award the tenders. There is no difference between this and bribery. Financial Regulation calls it "inducement" and you will get a R500 000 fine for it.

  • JanGrimbeek - 2012-10-28 13:10

Trying to launder money without any questions asked, the old way, steal it and donate it to the ANC and nobody will ever question or guess anything "untoward" cause the ANC do not have to declare incomes and the donors also do not have to declare the means of income of the money that they donate....... See the ATM and Cash-in-Transit roberies escalate in the FS from now on forward till the conference !
