Johannesburg - An ANC party representative councillor in Madibeng, North West, died on Wednesday, apparently after being shot with a rubber bullet at Marikana over the weekend.

The Friends of the Youth League said in a statement that the woman died in hospital after allegedly being shot by police on Saturday.

Police spokesperson says Dennis Adriao could not confirm the woman's death.

A spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, Moses Dlamini, said he had not heard of the woman's death.

However, the spokesperson for the North West provincial government, Lesiba Kgwele, confirmed the woman had died.

"Executive mayor of Bojanala Platinum district municipality, Louis Diremelo, is at the mortuary and has confirmed the death."

The woman's name could not be released until her next of kin were informed.

A post mortem is to be conducted.

Kgwele said Premier Thandi Modise had appealed for calm and urged the relevant authorities to investigate the matter if it was found that the woman did not die of natural causes.
