Johannesburg - The ANC has postponed its national executive committee (NEC) meeting and its coming national list conference, following the death of former president Nelson Mandela.

"The decision to postpone these gatherings is in light of the tragedy that has befallen our country and the world, losing the father of our nation and icon of our struggle Isithwalandwe/Seaparankoe Comrade Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela," African National Congress spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.

"A new date for these meetings will be announced in due course."

The NEC meeting was initially scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday, and the national list conference on Sunday and Monday.

Mandela died at his Houghton home in Johannesburg on Thursday night, at the age of 95.

Mthembu said ANC officials would meet provincial office bearers and tripartite alliance partners to "consolidate the ANC’s programme of remembrance" in honour of Mandela.

"The president of the African National Congress, Comrade Jacob Zuma, will also today lead the delegation of the national executive committee to visit the Mandela family in Houghton, Johannesburg, to convey our condolences to the family during this difficult time."
