Prayers for Mandela

Prayer services have been held across the country in honour of Nelson Mandela. See all the pictures.

Johannesburg - Hundreds of ANC members flocked to the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg on Sunday for an interfaith prayer service to honour the late former president Nelson Mandela.

Most of the crowd was dressed in ANC t-shirts and the official Women's League uniform.

Others were dressed in uniforms from their various churches.

They sang and danced to gospel music which was blasted through the speakers.

The prayer included people of the Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Bahai and African faiths.

A large banner with a smiling Mandela hung from the roof of the arena.

Big posters with Mandela's famous quotes were also placed at the front of the arena.

One read: "I am the captain of my soul" while another said: "Your freedom and mine cannot be separated."

President Jacob Zuma and Paul Mashatile were expected to address the congregation.

Zuma had requested that churches, organisations and individuals all across the country hold prayers for Mandela and his family.

Earlier, Zuma had joined some of the Mandela family at another service held at the Methodist Church in Bryanston.
