ANC to pay for Selebi’s funeral

2015-01-27 14:30

Johannesburg - The ANC will pay for former police chief Jackie Selebi's funeral and memorial service, it said on Tuesday.

"It was agreed with the family that the African National Congress will be allowed to bury comrade Jackie Selebi who has been for most of his life at the centre of the organisation's leadership," spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

"Based on this decision the ANC will bear all costs related to his memorial service and funeral."
Selebi died on Friday aged 64. He had reportedly suffered from diabetes and kidney problems.

Selebi was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment on 3 August 2010, for taking bribes from convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti.

The former head of Interpol started serving his sentence in 2011, after being found guilty of corruption in 2010. He was released from Pretoria Central Prison on medical parole less than a year later.

The ruling party had held numerous meetings with the family and a committee representing the family and the ANC was set up. The committee would be led by the ANC's deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte.

A memorial service would be held on Thursday at the Tshwane Events Centre in Pretoria at 17:00.

The funeral would be held at the NG Kerk in Pretoria on Saturday at 08:00.

      Brad Herbert - 2015-01-27 14:43

Why we paying for a CONVICTED criminal's funeral. Glad that useless piece of rubbish is gone, now just waiting for the rest of the anc to die off

      Jurgen Hartmann - 2015-01-27 14:45

I will be glad to chip in for Showerhead's planting, as long as its DAMN SOON!!

      Sharlene Meifels - 2015-01-27 14:49

Unbelievable. Its like being rewarded for being a criminal, even in death! This can only happen in the ANC ...with our money... #ZumaMustGo!

      Dawid Venter - 2015-01-27 14:52

FFS!! For what he stole billions and once again was the cause of shame on S.A. Let his family pay for his funeral if they don't have money give him a government funeral. Only the anc buries all their criminals and thieves.

      Denver Sykes - 2015-01-27 14:54

and buried from the NG Kerk???????

      Andre - 2015-01-27 15:04

He deserves to be dumped in a landfill!

      Christine Mannsberger - 2015-01-27 15:20

Lyn, my thoughts exactly - ANC (who has recently pleased (or begged) with businesses for money?) or the taxpayers? I don't want to contribute a cent to his funeral. He earned so much sure his family can afford it?

      Yob Vas - 2015-01-27 15:22

the ANC PAYS FOR NOTHING as it has NO MONEY we, the tax payers, will shoulder this burden as usual oh look, load shedding has just hit - I'M GETTING SICK OF ALL THESE GOOD STORIES THE ANC HAS TO TELL.

      Michael Kleber - 2015-01-27 15:47

you know you are scratching the bottom of the barrel when you label a corrupt police commissioner a hero

      kalabafazi - 2015-01-27 16:03

To the anc he will be a hero. The only difference between Jackie and the rest of the anc is that he was caught and convicted. It's not like any of the ance are clean, so why wouldn't they label him as a hero. It's called honour amongst thieves.

      Du Toit Grobler - 2015-01-27 16:27

MInstens doen hulle nou die eerbare ding deur Lewis se aansoek om parool goed te keur - of dit ooit gaan gebeur hang af.......?

Comrades and compatriots have special priviledges.

      POPEYE - 2015-01-27 23:32

Where does the anc get their money? Steal it from their own people who vote for them.

      Om Nom Nom - 2015-01-28 12:27

You can bet your ass we're paying for this funeral!!!!!!!!!!

      Kenny Williams - 2015-01-28 13:58

"Memorial service" Who the hell wants to remember this corrupt scumbag except other corrupt scumbags. If serving the ANC well means behaving just like Zuma and his band of thieves then he has done a sterling job. So the ANC will pay for his funeral. I am sure this will happen. The ANC is bancrupt and begging from business for money. I will willingly pay for Zuma's funeral if they make it a double .

      Rialine Steyn - 2015-01-28 15:03

It is us. The ANC is the government, and the government gets their money from the tax payer. He is defrauding the taxpayers from his grave.

      Dunte Devante - 2015-01-29 10:52

"ANC to pay for Selebi funeral". How about you tell us some thing we didn't already know.

  • Ygivadamn - 2015-01-27 14:33

Its not surprising....but hey its also biblical that we should not to leave a body exposed.

      Kenny Williams - 2015-01-28 14:02

Joseph, what have you got against NIKE. I wear their brand of running shoe but will certainly not wear them in future if this is to happen. Just flush his remains down the toilet.

  • Truth24 - 2015-01-27 14:34

You mean WE pay. Why pay towards a convicted criminal's funeral? Was it not enough to pay for his stay in jail?

      Jurgen Hartmann - 2015-01-27 14:43

The anc is made up of the lowest form of scum. They would glorify child molesters if give half a chance.

      Patricia Dewet - 2015-01-27 19:09

What about the millions he was suppose to pay back for his numerous court cases. Never see it and now we pay for the funeral as well.

  • StormyWeather - 2015-01-27 14:35

With what money? The rumour mill says that the ANC are broke. I as a citizen would like to see the Ledger entries for the next month to ensure that not one cent of my taxes paid for this mans funeral! **sigh** see yet again how the ruling party glorify a disgraced person? What message does this send out to our youth.

      Jurgen Hartmann - 2015-01-27 14:47

If you believe they are broke after having their grubby little paws in the public purse for two decades, then you also believe in Bugs Bunny. They just have it well hidden, like the secret European bank accounts from Etoll.....

  • Steven Cox - 2015-01-27 14:36

Seems like a simple case of honor amongst thieves

      Jurgen Hartmann - 2015-01-27 14:47

      Dishonour amongst thieves??

  • brettinlux - 2015-01-27 14:46

  • Jan Francois Kotze - 2015-01-27 14:47

OMG. The NG kerk has existed in this country since van Riebeeck landed here. Surely this is the end of the road for it? Wonder if the service will be in Afrikaans.

      Goeie Genugtig - 2015-01-27 14:56

And remember, that is when all the trouble in the country started ......

      StormyWeather - 2015-01-27 15:01

I literally laughed out loud when I read NG Kerk - really? I thought they HATED anything to do with the Afrikaaners. ha ha ha

  • Ria Cook - 2015-01-27 14:51

As far as we know, the ANC is bankrupt. So guess who's gonna end up paying.

      Sihle Mkhize - 2015-01-27 14:55

I will pay. It my anc, it my selebi and its not yours. You dismally failed to bring peace in this country but all you could is destroy the black man. Climb in your box maan. Like it or not. Were ruling this country, you can scream and say what ever s#!t we are ruling the place

      Francois Jordaan - 2015-01-27 15:03

Lol Sihle you are doing hell of a great job. Corruption sky high, unemployment rate goes up, crime rate goes up, power outages are crazy, economy goes down. So enlighten me about this peace you are talking about? And stop being so racist

      StormyWeather - 2015-01-27 15:07

Sihle - do you not understand that he was CONVICTED? He was a thief! As a man, I have pity, but what he did was wrong and should not be glorified. And to be clear - very few of us actually care who rules - it is whether they do it properly that really matters. And at that, the ANC is failing the people of this country terribly, yes, even you.

      Duane van Vuuren - 2015-01-27 15:13

Yep, Sihle. And what a "bang up" job you guys are doing at the moment. Corruption everywhere. Rape and murder continually on the rise. Well done, partner. Well done. Greaaaat job you're doing there.

      rory - 2015-01-27 15:14

#Sihle Yes ruling the country, you are right. But a small question. With all the corruption, Eskom debacle, unemployment and the rest do you think that your are running the country effectively? Your track record certainly disproves it!

      Michael Cassel - 2015-01-27 15:51

@sihle so basically you implied that the black man has been destroyed??? I don't think this is true, there are many black people with honour and integrity and good people clearly which you are not, you seem like an ignorant racist pig and it is you and your fellow ANC who are destroying this country

      Soko Sjavarava - 2015-01-27 16:02

im kinda wondering why white people complain about tax payers money being misused as if its only them who contributes towards it. But im hundred percent certain that they dont even contribute half of the revenue. Come on guys your constance nagging its growing annoyance, can you please change the (LEARNING AREA) or should i say the SUBJECT.

      Francois Jordaan - 2015-01-27 16:13

Soko maybe it is because we are the only ones who do not agree with the state using our tax money for pleasure purposes and so forth?

      fransvisserdsb - 2015-01-27 16:30

Sihle... so you are happy that the ruling party pays for the funeral of a convicted criminal? In most civilized countries in the world you would not be honoured if you were caught with your fingers in the till...

      fransvisserdsb - 2015-01-27 16:44

Soko, just a quick one - yes, we all pay tax, some more than others. But maybe you are ok if your money is stolen and wasted, I am not. By the way, you should really go and check the SARS website - it is a useful source of information. Apparently less than 900 000 people in SA pay more than 50% of all the Personal income tax, and Personal income taxe make up 34% of the total government revenue. So the tax burden is very heavy on a small percentage of the population - about 2% of the people (and no they are not all white, they are generally educated professionals of all races) carry close to 20% of the tax burden. It is probably more, as they also pay VAT, and are generally in charge of large companies who pay the bulk of the company taxes. So most intelligent, educated people (of all races) are fed up with their money being squandered.

      Denise Ryan - 2015-01-27 21:10

Sihle - We can depose of this feckless regime in less than six months. Clearly we have no idea how powerful white people are in SA. If we all stop working for six months - close all our companies, buy no electricity, pay no taxes, buy no fuel, pay no bills, etc, etc - the country will collapse in an instant.

      Kenny Williams - 2015-01-28 14:06

Sihle, your mother is calling you to clean your bedroom. Please leave comments on this forum to those who have the brains to make decent comments. You are a racist moron who does not even realize that the ANC are stealing YOUR money.

  • Pixie86 - 2015-01-27 15:01

I think we should note it says ANC will pay noy government. It's their money from memberships etc not state money

      Francois Jordaan - 2015-01-27 16:15

Remember that by being the ruling party they do get money from the state. Every party does, the amount just depends on whether they are the ruling party or how many seats they have

      Om Nom Nom - 2015-01-28 12:49

As if the ANC could ever separate party from state. State monies has been used numerous times for party purposes before. Oilgate jumps to mind.

  • Sifiso Molotshwa - 2015-01-27 15:03

Personally I also feel the man has done a lot more good than bad however good leadership would dictate leading by example thus being seen as taking a stance against corruption and not affording Mr Selebi an all cost paid funeral.

      fransvisserdsb - 2015-01-27 16:46

Thanks Sifiso - I agree. paying for his funeral would seem to condone his actions.

  • Diane Chow - 2015-01-27 15:07

So there is honour amongst thieves... Pun intended

  • Ruth Logie - 2015-01-27 15:13

That seems to be a fair compromise. Respect from his comrades for what he did in the past, but no state funeral for a criminal. The more quietly he is laid to rest, the better, and may a shameful episode in our history be buried with him "finished and klaar".

  • Walter Kohlhöfer - 2015-01-27 15:14
