ANCWL: Corrective rape senseless

2011-05-10 09:35

Johannesburg - Corrective rape is "heartless and senseless" discrimination, the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) said on Tuesday.

"As the ANCWL, we regard corrective rape as nothing less than a hate crime and a clear indication that women, children, gay and lesbian individuals continue to be regarded as soft targets for cowardly acts of victimisation," spokesperson Nosipho Ntwanambi said in a statement.

The league was reacting to the "corrective rape" of a 13-year-old girl in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, last Thursday.

Ntwanambi said the ANCWL would appeal to Parliament and relevant gender structures to categorise this form of rape as a hate crime.

She said the police should respond quickly when such incidents were reported so offenders would "face the full might of the law".

Last month, two openly gay women, Noxolo Nogwaza and Nokuthula Radebe, were raped and murdered. The attacks were believed to be motivated by homophobia.

13yrs old?!?!? How the hell do you know at that age whether you are gay? damn.....well besides that, I think it is sick for anyone to rape in any way form or kind. but to do it just because you are gay and want to change SOMEONE ELSE is terrible. If someone is gay it's their life not someone elses to make the decision for you! To hell with all those sick minded rapists and bastards!

Do note how conspicuously quiet showerhead is about this. What a savage and barbaric culture...

      Spoofed - 2011-05-10 10:31

I want to say that i've always known i was gay since a very young age but that would not be right as what does a 6 year old know about sex and sexuality, i would rather say i knew i was different. While other girls were playing dolls and dress up i was out playing in the field with the boys riding our bikes and building tree houses. I only came out when i was 15, before that i was bisexual and that was more excepting than saying i'm gay.

      eyrie - 2011-05-10 11:02

I knew before I was ten that I was gay

      Matt - 2011-05-10 11:48

I think it's too early. I grew up in ultra-open Holland and what I saw there was loads of kids who were straight, but were pummelled by pro-gay media who were actively encouraging everyone to try it - it confused so many people and kids especially. Kids who never thought otherwise started to contemplate whether they may or may not be, tried it...

      mm - 2011-05-10 12:17

@Matt. You are so wrong. But I know its not because of ignorance, but because you do not and cannot fully understand what being gay really is. If you sleep with a man today you are not neccessarily gay, just a dude who slept with a dude. You do not understand that being gay is as part of your being as having blue eyes is. You are either gay/bi or you are not. Sure, I agree, pro media can influence kids to "try" things. It does every day. Look how pro smoking ads caused kids to try it. Yet, not all who tried it are smokers. Kids will be kids, and they WILL experiment, media or no media. But if you are not gay, even if you do try it, you will not be changed by media or anybody, because being gay is not part of your being. And trying to force gay kids to be and act straight is as harmful to them as forcing a child to do or be anything he is not. These poor kids have nowhere to turn without abuse and no rolemodels on how to be healthy kids. We need to create a world that is tollerant of everyone, even though we don't understand their differences to our own. We're all human. If you are straight, nothing can make you gay - no amount of pro-gay media will make you gay will it?, just like if you are gay, nothing will make you straight either.

Ironical that the ANCYL are the ones who started this corrective rape thing...

      Nicole - 2011-05-10 13:20

Well, actually....according to childhood development, sexual exploration starts as early as 2-3 yrs old. Children (as much as adults are sexual beings) But between 2 and 9-11(approx) its self exploration, seeing yourself as a separate person to the rest of the world. Touching your own body, etc. (This is completely normal and natural btw) Then from pre adolescence onwards (which can start as early as 8-9) children start noticing other people as sexual beings, and sporadic feelings of a sexual nature may occur. So when a thirteen yr old girl is attracted to other girls/ boys, its completely normal. Think back to your first crush....Yup, was around that time.

      CornflakeGir - 2011-05-10 14:24

Let's not forget that there is some scientific research to try and shed light on the issue of when a child's sexualtity is determined. Some studies have indicated that this is actually decided for you during your foetal development, it's essentially an abnormality in the brain development as early as 20 weeks of pregnancy. I'm not saying this is this is the gospel truth or proven beyond question, but I absolutely believe that you do not choose your own sexuality. Furthermore, I'm sure at 13 you have a pretty good idea of what you like (even if sex doesn't necessarily come into it). But I think we're getting a bit of track here with the whole gay-discussion :)

      DebbyLou - 2011-05-10 15:35

My sister has been gay since the day she was born - it's in the genes! Whatever happened to our constitution? Does it not say something about the right to life - which for me is I can be who I want to be ... gay or not! It's not seen well in terms of Christianity but each to their own and who made people God to think they can un-gay somebody by raping them? F*^&%^$t people can be so freaking stupid sometimes!

  • Matt - 2011-05-10 09:39

They are right, but I can't help questioning the timing - would they have felt so strongly 1 year before the elections?

      Mnr. Smith - 2011-05-10 09:55

good point, and suddenly the municipal strikes are called off.

      OuWitBooi - 2011-05-10 11:02

The ANC has been issuing lots of very moral sounding statements, and many promises, lately. But there is NO ACTION from them. If you have followed these "corrective rape" court cases you will have seen that some of them have been postponed 20 or more times, files get lost, prosecutors get re-allocated and the delays are endless. If the ANCWL really felt anything for these victims they would have been out there protesting at the court hearings. But no, it's much easier to sit in their plush offices and issue meaningless press statements. Come on you lazy cows - get out there and do something about it.

      Milana - 2011-05-11 09:51

what does this have to do with elections? people just reserve ur comments if you don't have anything to say, please.

      Matt - 2011-05-10 11:44

@ Mnr Smith - not to condone it, but imagine the satisfaction of the chap who did that to Juju - having done the thing that most people would like to perform on him with a fire hydrant

  • AJ - 2011-05-10 09:47

Message would have meant more coming from the ANCYL (but then again they probably disagree).

  • anna - 2011-05-10 09:51

ANY form of rape is senseless ... Not to mention sick! And yes, why all the fuss now before the elections?

      Psychotron - 2011-05-10 10:15

I thought rape is a crime, seems like the ANCYL doesn't think so.

  • Mnr. Smith - 2011-05-10 10:02

Barbarism at its worst. But what else do you expect from a Stone-Age culture??

  • Mike - 2011-05-10 10:03

It is encouraging to hear the ANCWL make a statement like this however, with the ANCYL president's disparaging treatment of Caster Semenya, the two sentiments within the ANC are contradictory and thus make me suspicious regarding the sincerity. When you have the ANCYL president making ignorant, disparaging comments regarding similar issues such as transgender, this simply entrenches hatred instead of educating people to respect individuals differeces, weather one agrees with it or not. Having said that, I would feel more comfortable and find it more productive if the ANC/ANCYL/ANCWL put their money where their mouths were and actually actively worked against hate crimes of any sort. Talk has become way too cheap, especially before an election.

  • Gorilla - 2011-05-10 10:03

I wonder if their friend Bob Mugape agrees?

  • Gavin - 2011-05-10 10:06

@Kevin - I always get upset when people take a world problem and label it as "This is Africa" or "only in SA" but sadly we will always be known as the country that gave the world the terms "Apartheid" and "Corrective Rape"

  • camp.j - 2011-05-10 10:15

There is NO such thing as "corrective rape" FFS! Rape is rape period.

      Kevin King - 2011-05-10 10:38

There is a difference, rape happens worldwide, corrective rape is a SA thing.

      p123 - 2011-05-10 13:08

Julius Malema invented this while day-dreaming in woodwork class...

      Nicole - 2011-05-10 13:10

Also, the reason they use the term "corrective" rape is because lesbian women are being targeted in communities and are being told by the rapists that they will "fix" them. Thats where the term originates from.

      cerveza - 2011-05-10 15:10

@Camp - although both are the same crimes, they have different intentions, and one can only start to prevent crimes once you can identify the intent

  • Podgette - 2011-05-10 10:20

Most HUMAN beings think this is heartless and senseless! Is it just newsworthy because the ANCWL have said this, it is no great revelation on their part - WE ALL THINK IT IS BLADDY DISGUSTING!! Why politicise it?

  • ji - 2011-05-10 10:25

the ANCWL says its wrong but fat & useless malema and the ANCYL says its ok and the youth must multiply , dont the two work together or is this just more proof that the ANC are a gang of idiots . sex with anyone under 18 should be criminal , 13 is just disgusting and sick .

  • Muna - 2011-05-10 10:26

''Ntwanambi said the ANCWL would appeal to Parliament and relevant gender structures to categorise this form of rape as a hate crime.'' • Mannie777 - 2011-05-10 10:40

What is this so-called "corrective rape" Who came up with this idiotic saying?? I mean seriously now... raping someone to change them from gay to straight i suppose ... what is the meaning of this? Do we now get different "types" of rape? Rape is rape.

  • cheryl.sadie - 2011-05-10 10:43

Regarding the “corrective rape” News24 Rape is RAPE. Giving it a name, seems to give reason for justification. A man will rape, because that is what he does and who he is... A RAPEST, he does NOT NEED an excuse. There is an old defence: “ She dressed like a slut, so I raped her, she was asking for it” . They were not raped because they were gay, THEY WERE RAPED! Don’t blame their sexual orientation for them being raped. There is NO excuse for rape, there should be NO acceptable reason or classification of rape, RAPE IS RAPE! Stop hiding behind the excuses and reasons. There are so many guidelines that rule our lives and society and actions, but no enforcement. We should look in to a “SEX CRIMES” court

  • thetruthis - 2011-05-10 10:44

Only barbarians can think like this !

  • cheryl.sadie - 2011-05-10 10:49

If I could give advice to anyone that is under age: Knowing if you are gay is not the point. As a young child or teenager and even adult you will be tormented if you come out in school. There is such a great amount of pressure in school, primary and high school. Gay or Lesbian or any of the other choices that you hold inside yourself... Think about what you are wanting to do when you come out at school level. Just because we have it in our legislation, does not mean that it will be accepted. Be true to yourself, and mostly, do what you can to protect yourself. You have the rest of your life to be who you are, there is no rush.

  • mlesoli - 2011-05-10 10:51

People stop obssessing with Malema and lets stand up for our democracy and the rights of others, homosexuality its there and there is a reason why other people are gay or lesbian, just like why some of us are straight, I have gay and lesbian friends and it really makes one sad to see people being raped and killed just because they are different. This is what Apartheid used to do and now we want homosexuals to feel unwanted in thier own country lets fight this homophobic people please

@ Andries - amen. That aside, corrective rape is wrong from all aspects.

      Hello there - 2011-05-10 11:51

So Andries, by that logic, Lot's daughters were acting all christian by making their father drunk, having sex with him and getting pregnant ? Here's a Chinese mantra for you. Say this a few times and you'll feel better: whatta poosai am

      Morkel - 2011-05-10 12:00

En dit Andries is wat verkeerd is met geloof. 10 uit 10 vir veroordeling! Maar indien jy so wil aanhou, jou god het gay mense gemaak.

      x - 2011-05-10 12:07

Andries that is just your opinion. Mine is that there is nothing wrong with being gay and being gay is also not against the law.

      Nicole - 2011-05-10 13:04

Whether you believe it or not your god made each and every gay and lesbian person just the way they are. suck on that moron.

      God_Lover - 2011-05-10 13:38

@Andries and all who quote Gods word in Judgement. I am a very straight Man who loves God. Christians should be demonstrating LOVE to those battling with their sexual identity. There is only one sin which is unforgiveable and that is Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. The Love of Jesus and His Grace are sufficient for all. The bible says Lust is the same as Adultry and Hatred as murder, Jesus said it. Love all people irrespective of orientation, its Gods job to deal with what we have as challenges / sins in our lives.

      CB2 - 2011-05-10 14:51

@Andries - Who gave you the power to judge? In the Bible it states clearly that you are not allowed to judge another person!! You are wrong, not gay people!

  • Matt - 2011-05-10 11:50

  • Fanie - 2011-05-10 12:05

  • Currie_Mafia - 2011-05-10 12:25

Shocking News from Uganda.... Dear friends, In 48 hours, the Ugandan Parliament may vote on a brutal new law that carries the death penalty for homosexuality. Thousands of Ugandans could face execution -- just for being gay. We've helped stop this bill before, and we can do it again. After a massive global outcry last year, Ugandan President Museveni blocked the bill's progress. But political unrest is mounting in Uganda, and religious extremists in Parliament are hoping confusion and violence in the streets will distract the international community from a second push to pass this hate-filled law. We can show them that the world is still watching. If we block the vote for two more days until Parliament closes, the bill will expire forever. We have no time to lose. Almost half a million of us have already joined the call -- let’s get to one million voices against Uganda's gay death penalty in the next 48 hours -- click here to take action, then forward this email to everyone:

  • Mamlaskobo - 2011-05-10 12:49

Why is it even called corrective crime? This is a misnomer. I know it's so called because that is the intention, but this gives a false impression as if it actually is corrective. Now, can we give it a clear name like man-on-lesbian rape or something to that effect. To use the word 'corrective ' to describe such a heinous crime is a completely misleading. At parliament it should be given a suitable name!

      Fanie - 2011-05-10 18:01

corrective rape, affirmative action, corrective crime ALL VERY SICK as they have one effect - destroying the soul of a person

  • grumpy - 2011-05-10 12:59

  • Irvine - 2011-05-10 13:00

She said the police should respond quickly when such incidents were reported so offenders would "face the full might of the law". Hahahahaha - really - what "might" is that? Fact is - it is RAPE - which in itself should be punished by castration and a 20 yr min sentence (death would be preferable)...and to top it all, it is CHILD RAPE! Whilst it may be important to ANCWL to have it categorised as a hate crime, they should be focussing on lobbying their government to impose the heaviest sentences on anyone who rapes, regardless of the reason! They should also lobby for the government to run campaigns that portray those who rape as lower than pond scum, that these people should be repoerted, that raping babies does not cure HIV, that rape does not make a man but a COWARD..etc etc....point is - these ANC leeches sit around doing NOTHING to make the lives of its people, especially women and children, better! They will toyi toyi to change the name of a street, but not to save the life of a child - hypocrites!

      Hello there - 2011-05-10 15:57

Hellomotto, they had 3 children, 2 boys and a girl. What's even worse, is that Genesis 4:15 says God put a mark on Cain so that everybody could recognise him and not kill him. Why you'd mark someone when there are only 5 people on earth is beyond me but ok. After this, in the very next sentence, and this is in the bible that no christian apparently reads, Cain AND HIS WIFE had a boy called Enoch and then Cain went to build a city. For himself, the wife and son. The wife fell out of the sky apparently. He built a city called Nod, hellomotto, not a house. 6 people on earth and they need a city. If that isn't forward thinking then I don't know what is. The scary thing is that people who believe this are allowed to vote, drive and have children.

  • Hello there - 2011-05-10 16:11

For people who don't know, christians get the "gay is against God" from 2 sources in the bible, Leviticus and Paul. Regarding the OT or Leviticus, the entire OT does not apply to christians in any way, shape or form. It is a watered down history of the Jewish people and as an example, there aren't only 10 commandments; there are 613 mitzvoh which only applies to Jews. One of them says a woman on her period must go to the edge of the city and no christian woman does this. They only follow the warm and fuzzy parts. Paul wrote 13 letters to various congregations (only 6 letters are from one source; the other 7 contain words, syntax and grammar that wasn't yet invented at the supposed time of Paul). One sentence in one letter deals with this gay thingie. The scary thing here is that Paul never met Jesus and never heard a single sermon (his crusade started about 80 years after the crucifixion). His ideas on what he THOUGHT Jesus would do, are in those letters, not the words or intent of Jesus himself. In fact, most of the dogma, rules, etc come from Paul, not Jesus. You're better off calling yourself Paulians

Homosexuality is the ONLY sin in the bible that the Lord gave up on. That he gave them up to their sins. That is how much he hates it!. Thats enough for me. Sorry guys and girls if you are partaking of same sex, you had better come right or you are going to pay the price in eternity.

      Mannie777 - 2011-05-10 17:02

and you will "pay the price" for eating pork and your hubby for cutting his beard or are you being "selective" in what you want to take literally from the bible? Please, oh clever one, educate us.

  • Martin Foster - 2011-05-10 23:46

Why the labeling of Lesbian? The mind boggles. Who referred to the crime as corrective? Have they caught the miscreant? A child was raped and the justification used was that it was corrective. Next these cowardly reprobates will be raping boys and claiming it is an aversion therapy.

  • me - 2011-05-11 20:10

No rape is justified...ever! "NO" should be the rubicon, everything against consent, be it gay, lesbian, in or out of marriage, is rape...!!Sex should be about passion and love, not lust, "tradition/culture" and motivation. But the again, this is "cultureless" Africa.... And, prior to jumping on the bandwagon in order to shoot me down, PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG and define CULTURE, it does not exist in the African vocabluary!!

  • SaintBruce - 2011-05-11 22:17

I wrote a comment suggesting that there are spiritual aspects of the gay and lesbian condition which answered ideas put out by mm yet it seems to have been removed ??? Interesting that the 'world' view of a thing is OK but when any view is expressed that may suggest taking a look at it from another angle, that gets trashed or removed! Never heard of spirits called 'Incubus' or 'Succubus' or perhaps the African demon spirit called Tokoloshe ? All sexual aspects from the realm of the spririt. Deny them if you will but there are very many that know this is very real. I have a huge intellect and spent time in the gay community of Cape Town as a youth and a Jazz Dancer, so I have knowledge of what I am taking about at 'grassroots' level. Don't knock it even if you don't agree in your head, listen to your heart and you may just learn a few new things. Capiche?
