ANCWL: No bail for Pistorius

2013-02-17 19:03

Johannesburg - Paralympian Oscar Pistorius should not be granted bail when he appears in court on Tuesday, the ANC Women's League said on Sunday.

League spokesperson Troy Martens said the magistrate should take into consideration claims in the media that there was a strong case of premeditated murder against him.

"It is with this in mind that the ANCWL urges the magistrate to heed the call of the prosecutors in this case and deny bail," said Martens.

Pistorius was arrested on Thursday after his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, 29, was shot dead at his home in Pretoria.

The 26-year-old 'blade runner' is currently in police custody and is expected to apply for bail at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The league called for Pistorius to be treated like any other person accused of committing a crime of this nature.

"No special circumstances should be considered based on his celebrity status," said Martens.

The ANCWL said that Steenkamp's death was not an isolated incident and therefore the league was extremely concerned with the high levels of femicide in the country.

Martens said the Medical Research Council of South Africa released a study indicating that a woman was killed by her intimate partner every eight minutes in South Africa.

"No women should have to die at the hands of their romantic partner, but research indicates just over 50% of all women murdered are the result of intimate femicide," she said.

The league also sent their condolences to Steenkamp's family.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the bright young woman who had the world at her feet just a week ago; but that was all taken away from her in an instant."

Agreed 100% ladies .... We dont want anybody running off....

      goyougoodthing - 2013-02-17 19:30

If he's treated like every other criminal they police will lose the docket, case would only be in 3 years and he would get off...

      wade.johnson.58726 - 2013-02-17 19:47

Bail or parole is only set aside for those who have found to be Guilty, such as Schabir Shaik & Jackie Selebi. I don't disagree that Oscar should remain in custody, but a remark like this coming from the ANCWL, is so hypocritical.

      liam.dafydd - 2013-02-17 19:57

Who asked the ANCW league's opinion? They are part of a murdering ANC government.

      liam.dafydd - 2013-02-17 19:57

The ANC government is murders as they do NOTHING about crime. People die everyday because of them!

      Jack - 2013-02-17 21:02

This is what happens when the big chief, e.g. Shaka Zulu is not around to impale the tsotsis on sharp sticks as a warning to others. The 'life sentence' for many is a God send. No work, free food, drugs, sex, and you and I get to pay for it. Who wouldn't kill?

      tilly.vanoudtshoorn - 2013-02-17 21:49

Gosh seems like every SA was in Oscar's house at the time, as they are all now the judge, jury and executioner. With so many eye witnesses in the house at that time there should not be a need for a court case. He's been judged already.

hein.huyser - 2013-02-18 00:01 Raise your voice to these murders as well then you will be taken seriously. As for now, you only waste taxes

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2013-02-18 06:25

It's not really for the ANCWL to demand or refuse bail. Let the jurists decide on this matter based on the facts, and not emotions or allegiances!

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2013-02-18 07:31

Just a thought. How much support did Jub Jub get from the public? He also had a family that was very proud of him, and sad to see his life destroyed. He had a good career and many people idolised him. In all he was convicted of murder although he was criminally reckless but had no intent or premeditation to kill. However even a high ranking Hawks spokesman indicating that Jub Jub should be raped in jail. I am just interested in the discrepancy in public empathy between these two cases.

Hmm, so ANCWL what is your position on the man who chopped off his wife's head for muti? Or the countless others who have murdered and/raped their partners in oh, say the last two months? This is selective grandstanding. Have an opinion by all means but then it must apply across the board, not just to the most high profile cases.

      Mbongeni Masilela - 2013-02-17 23:33

      neil.ross.5473 - 2013-02-18 09:03

zuma was accused of raping a woman. ancwl loudly supported him before any evidence or trial. Now they are doing the opposite. Who cares what the ancwl says. They only say what is popular, with no insight or intelligence. So, ancwl, shut up! oscar will get his trial, and he will pay.

The ANCWL is commenting because this is within their mandate as an entity body directly related to womens rights, abuse etc which is inside their political portfolio ie isues that effect women in SA everyday. However, for us as everyday citizens, we pass comments and opnions amongst ourselves, which we are entiteled too. What I do think is irresponsible is for any political organisation to make such a statement on what is coming out of the media at such a premature stage of the investigation when no hard facts have been presented in court YEt. Allow the judicial to to do its work. Personally, I feel that this guy is as guilty as hell. If I was representing any political party , I would say nothing. tshepisojonathan.morapedi - 2013-02-17 22:25

Whether the is guilty or not is not up to us nor ANCWL to announce. The present SA has become the mirror of it's own past where political prisoners or any black person was convicted before they had any chance of proving their case. Our constitution is the best in the and what makes it the best is that line that says everyone accused of any crimes is innocent until proven guilty by the court of law. How many times have you seen people being tried and convicted by the public and still have the court exornerate them and still have the public see them as guilty. I'm not saying Oscar is not guilty though is seems like he is and I'm not saying he is because it seems like he is. All we as South Africans need to do is speak against domestic violence as it is a serious matter in our soceity. We can't keep talking about it when it becomes an international story and when that story dies, the topic dies with it. No matter how the facts look, the guy is still innocent until that last day he is pronounced guilty. Thank you!!!
