Johannesburg - The ANC Women's League (ANCWL) has had to put its elective conference on hold following the death of party stalwart Ruth Mompati.

The conference, which has already been postponed numerous of times, was meant to start on Thursday.

"It's not postponed, Mama Ruth has died... we really have to respect her as we prepare for the funeral," ANCWL spokesperson Edna Molewa told News24 on Wednesday.

"So that takes a week away from us."

She said the league would announce a new date for the conference in due course.

The embattled ANCWL has struggled to hold its elective conference since 2013 when it was originally meant to be held.

Their last elective conference was in 2008. A term lasts for five years and the next conference was meant to be held in 2013.

The women's league is said to be plagued by factionalism and infighting, forcing the ANC to step in to sort things out.
