Johannesburg - The ANCYL is not in the same league as the EFF, party leader Julius Malema said shrugging off statements that his party had stolen the "economic freedom" slogan from the ANC's youth wing.

"I don't think they even know what they mean by economic freedom, and where that concept started and what it seeks to achieve," he told reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Malema said there was a "poverty of ideas" in the youth league.

He said the ANCYL under his leadership had conceptualised the idea and now it was up to this new leadership to do the same.

"We conceptualised those things. Now we are told we have stolen it. There is absolutely nothing to be stolen from the ANCYL."

During the ANCYL's national congress earlier this month, youth league leaders claimed the EFF had stolen its slogan.

Some even went as far as to say the ANCYL should take the EFF to court.

'We are handling their boss'

Newly-elected ANCYL President Collen Maine, without mentioning Malema, accused him of stealing the ANCYL's policy positions, namely "economic freedom in our lifetime".

"Those counter-revolutionary forces must be told here and now that they are lost thieves who ultimately stole our themes and these ideas from this platform. Now they want to confuse our people," he said in his maiden address at the congress.

"Economic freedom belongs to the youth league and nobody else."

However, Malema has laughed this off, saying he was glad that the EFF was a "role model" to the youth league.

"The youth league must follow the EFF because there's nothing to follow in the mother body.

"They are just being told to mimic the EFF so that they can render the EFF irrelevant, but we have gone past that stage of youth politics. We are dealing with serious matters now and therefore they won't cope," he said.

Malema said the ANCYL had been reduced to a youth desk in the ANC.

The EFF's student command would deal with the ANCYL.

"We don't have time. Our student command will handle them, we are handling their boss," he said referring to President Jacob Zuma.
