ATM bombed at Cape Town tourist hotspot

2013-01-17 11:33

Cape Town - An ATM was blown up outside popular tavern Mzoli's in Gugulethu, Cape Town, it was reported on Thursday.

The Cape Times reported that police officers heard the bombing around 02:25am on Wednesday and went to investigate.

"They saw an unknown armed male suspect who fired at them with an automatic rifle. The members returned fire, but the suspect managed to escape the scene," said police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk.

The cash machine is the first to be targeted this year, following a spate of 21 bombings in the province last year.

No casualties were reported, no arrests were made and it was unclear whether any money was taken.

Just doesn't end does it. The crime and corruption in this country is a national sport.

      boere.troos.5 - 2013-01-17 14:54

Yes - we have all kinds of crime - Governmental, Political, Municipal,Police crime, Metro police crime, Post office crime, Army crime, Mining crime, Apartheid caused crime. The list just goes on?

    Cape Town

      dimitripappas - 2013-01-17 13:44

Please define your point more clearly? Are you implying that crime in CPT is worse than, say JHB? Because despite this being the first incident in CPT for the year, you still choose to open your trap. Bud, CPT remains arguably the safest cleanest province in the country, and that's a plain and simple fact, with multiple independent statistics to back that up

      Jason - 2013-01-17 14:02

Actually Fragtion as a Capetonian i will disagree with you. Per capita we have the highest murder rate in the world, tru its mostly in areas you and i wouldnt go but its a fact. Cape Town also has a policy of no press for crimes due to the fact that we are a big tourist destination. You would be shocked at how many Highjackings we have in CPT. But its still the best province to live in. LOL

Rather Cape Town than whatever BUSH you came from.

  • biggs.jodi - 2013-01-18 11:45

It's so sad we have to live like that with people doing such crimes! People could have been hurt, thank God nobody was but what message does that give to tourists visiting our beautiful mother city. Keep it safe people.

  • skhalos1 - 2013-01-19 06:57
