Accountant jailed for fraud

Cape Town - An accountant was sentenced to seven years behind bars on Monday for fraud involving R450 000, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

The Bellville Regional Court in Cape Town earlier found Carene van der Westhuizen guilty on 111 counts of fraud and one of failing to submit a tax return, NPA Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said.

She defrauded three entities she worked for by inflating expenses and then taking the difference between the inflated amount and the actual expense. She forged signatures on cheques and deposited a cheque meant for the SA Revenue Service into her own account.

Van der Westhuizen is the daughter of Marius van der Westhuizen, who was convicted of tax-related fraud and who committed suicide outside the Durbanville police station on the morning he was to be sentenced in August 2011.

Prison time for R450 000.....what about all the people linked to the ANC that defrauded the country out of billions? Haven't seen or heard of any arrests.... Like I said before, crime pays when you ANC or affiliated with them.

Are you promoting crime and corruption. She is guilty, she must do time.... no justifications.

Just wondering how somebody who completes a degree can actually be THAT stupid!!? Considering her mom was nailed, and the fact that she chose to steal a SARS cheque (knowing full-well that SARS will investigate non-receipt of tax returns)... how dumb can you be!!?

I'm an accountant - I DO deal with SARS a lot! Trust me, if a company is late filing a return, the fines start arriving! If you have never posted a return, or are simply doing it out of personal obligation, then I agree, they wouldnt know otherwise. Very different if you are already on their records (kinda like TV licences)

Clearly it runs in the family

If it (prison time) was implemented to all the government fraudsters, we could end up with a new state.

Some times it runs in the family. I know of 1 family of mother and 2 daughters who all have been fired or warned for stealing at work. Keeping 2 receipt books only works for a while.

Inconsistent since in Wynberg Court you can defraud SARS with over R1.8 mil and get three years house arrest. Magistrate Redelingshuys did that in this year. No consistency in applying the law. For me it is easy - jail time.
