Johannesburg - An acting national commissioner of correctional services was appointed because outgoing commissioner Thomas "Tom" Moyane had reached retirement age, his department said on Tuesday.

Moyane had reached the age of 60 and, according to the department's act, this is the maximum age to serve in this position or as a correctional officer, said department spokesperson Teboho Mokoena.

"The minister [Sibusiso Ndebele] carefully considered this and based the decision on what the law had prescribed," said Mokoena.

"The matter was discussed with him [Moyane]."

On Monday the department announced Nontsikelelo Jolingana would be acting national commissioner of the department.

Mokoena said there would be a proper handover process to ensure there was a smooth transition.

In a statement on Monday, Ndebele thanked Moyane for his contribution to the department.

"On behalf of the correctional services family, we express our sincere gratitude to Mr Moyane for his tireless efforts, and contribution to the correctional services fraternity," said Ndebele.

"Under his leadership, South Africa has made tremendous strides towards inculcating a human rights culture in our correctional system and ensuring safe, secure and humane incarceration."

Moyane had served as the head of the prisons department since 2010.
