Activists protest toy store's Israel ties

2012-11-03 14:00

Johannesburg - A group of Jewish activists will stage protests against outlets of toy store Reggies in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

In a statement released by the Stop The JNF on Saturday, the organisation said the protest against the store was due to Reggies support of "ethnic cleansing of Palestinians".

The protest would take place at selected stores in the three cities.

"The South African toy store Reggies is knowingly sponsoring an Israeli parastatal organisation, the Jewish National Fund (JNF), which is directly involved in the forced removal and dispossession of the Palestinian people.

"Despite numerous appeals to the director of Reggies, Mr Issy Zimmerman ...[He] not only refused to end his involvement with the JNF (a recipient of Reggies financial support) but threatened that he would intensify it," said Alan Horwitz spokesperson of the Stop The JNF.

Zimmerman also owned the South African franchise of ToysRus, Horwitz said.

He said a group of concerned Jewish South Africans who did not identify themselves with the JNF and Israel spearheaded the creation of a local chapter of the international campaign called Stop The JNF.

Protests would be held outside selected Reggies stores in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

"We feel that it is unconscionable that while hundreds of Palestinian children are held in Israeli prisons, a toy shop that purportedly celebrates children, is knowingly supporting an Israeli parastatal complicit in gross human rights violations," said Horwitz.

Efforts to get comment from Reggies were unsuccessful.

There is so much trouble in SA do we need more!

      lownabester - 2012-11-03 14:23

I support Israel, always has, always will. Not ashamed to admit it.

      lownabester - Tell us why?

      lownabester - 2012-11-03 14:53

Eddy, I dont think you will ever understand. It go way back many many years ago. I dont care about thumbs downs, I believe in standing up for what you support, and I dont need to justify it, to anyone. Israel forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      merven.halo - 2012-11-03 15:27

"Tell us why?" Too start off with, Israel don't use civilians as human shields, also Israel don't shoot rockets into Palistinian suburbs.

      carl.h.witte - 2012-11-03 17:45

Iownabester... answering a question with " because I said so" places you in the schoolyard, please, I sympathise with the jews and I would like to know why what and wherefore. Israel seems to become more like the old SA. I REALLY want to know whats going on, just facts not rhetoric. At the moment the Palestinians are winning the hearts and mind of the world. Thats where the battle is, not bombs, propaganda and backstabbing

      riedwaan.jefferies - 2012-11-03 22:52

@Merven.halo. So it's okay for Israel, to control all entry and exits to Palestine (Jordan & Egypt must do as the US says, otherwise no financial aid). They control, the land, sea and airspace and confine the Palesinians like a concentration camp. Control their every move, annex their lands, and demand total obedience otherwise they will have Apache Helicopters and Fighter Jets raining missiles down on them, alternatively the amoured tanks roll in. You see the bully is sitting nicely because it has all the military means and the Palestinians must make do do with homemade missiles/weapons. If only the borders were open so as to level the playing field.

      kitty2wp - 2012-11-03 16:19

why bother @ryan - you obviously not a Christian!!!

      johann.oosthuizen.94 - 2012-11-05 20:13

@ryan.rybicki - well said - there is no nation such as Palestine -they are Arab outcast, there is no language such as Palestinian - they speak Arabic, the land of Palestine is not mentioned once in the Holy Qu'ran but Jerusalem is mentioned 667 in the Bible as a Holy Place for the Jews. During the Holy Days , Jews pay respect on Temple Mound , while Palestinians play soccer during their so-called Holy Days. During prayer - Muslims turn their backs to the Temple mound, what measure of respect is this? @ kitty2wp - you are obviously an idiot - where do you get off deciding who is Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Hindu? - also -what are you trying to say? Have you been to Israel? Not via some backwater tour agency - the real Israel, the heart of Jewish and Christian Faith? I think not - although, my expertise lies somewhat more to the military, I suspect yours is entrenched in your liberal view of the world, romaticised by ignorant forebears and even less intelligent offspring. So - on that note - what about all the companies actively donating to Arab Terrorist Factions? i don't see all you liberals camping outside those countires, embasies and agency doors - no - that would negate you the comfort of being brave from a distance - very easy to shout foul in a group and not be recognised - you cowards - shame on you! Palestinians chose their path a long time ago - you bunch of idiots just fell for the Propaganda!! Israle is also doing a lot to save them, and get to a solution.

  • larry.piggott1 - 2012-11-03 14:35

What a load of Ball's. He is allowed to support who he likes. How about some protest against the South African Government that says all charitable donations from BEE companies must be only made to 100% black charities?

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 18:46

Of course. You are quite correct. Zimmerman is entitled to support whomever he wants. Just as the Palestinian Support Group , StoptheJNF and other organizations taking part in the protests starting tomorrow are entitled to inform prospective buyers about the Jewish National Front supported by Mr. Zimmerman's Reggies Toys. This owner of Reggies Town encourages children to contribute to the JNF, knowing full well that this money will go directly to oppressing the Palestinian people.

      David - 2012-11-03 20:18

Id rather money went to the planting of trees than to the likes of Hamas. What is your position on Hamas Braddo? Israel has turned the desert into an miracle. The JNF's money clearly does go to planting trees.

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 21:35

David, do you understand that Israel is demolishing the homes of bedouin people, and that the JNF is planting Jewish-only forests over the ruins of the villages so that the people can't return? Are you aware that the South African Forest o Galilee made possible with donations from South African Jewish kids, is planted over the village of Lubya?? And you "would rather have trees" If you are aware of these atrocities and support such horror, then getting beyond the Israeli govt spin about Hamas, the West Bank and Gaza with you is a pointless exercise to say the least.

Soon the Palestine will get freedom like the Jews did when hitler was defeated. Like South Africa in 1994, like Egypt, like Libya etc etc. It is just surprising that the people who got the worst discrimination in human history are the ones who are oppressive today.

      kitty2wp - 2012-11-03 16:28

@Sibusiso, look at Africa and the Middle East - it's mostly f*cked!. As for Israel - go there and see that there are Christians, Hindus, Jews and yes even Muslims living there together in peace. I was at Jerusalem in June and it was amazing to see Muslims and Jews and Christians in Jerusalem walking past one another without fear or hate. The Jews have survived the worst torture and may keep terrorists out of it's borders but there are millions of Muslims living in Israel and Israel is an amazing well organised place - and i felt free.

      christopher.davis.7946 - 2012-11-03 16:39

I wont even comment Sibusiso, what freedom?

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 18:54

@lownabester. I'm afraid that on many levels you have been misiniformed on so many levels. However, sticking with your "resilient" comment, the US gives Israel $3 Billion in direct aid each year, and around $13 Billion in arms and military equipment. That isn't resilience by any stretch of the imagination. They couldnt eat a fledgeling bird for breakfast without the US.

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-11-03 19:43

@ braddo, and the arabs without their billions from oil would do as little as Israel without American aid. The arabs buy their weapons from the western world as well, so your point is kinda useless. The Israeli nation have built up a country from nothing, no oil and very little in the way of natural resources, take the oil away from the middle east and they would have less than nothing, whereas Israel will still be producing goods and food, not only for local consumption, but for export as well. People seem to forget, the arab nations promised years ago they would drive the Israelis in the sea, turned out israel kicked their butts and will continue to do so for as long as it is necessary. While I don't hold with supressing any nation, one can hardly blame Israel for reacting the way it does, surrounding by millions of arabs who want them dead and try on a daily basis to fulfill that promise.

      lownabester - 2012-11-03 20:36

@braddo, Israel is doing the USA a favour, They are doing just fine. What you dont understand is that they can survive anything. They have the brains, money, belief and love for their country, No other country has that. Israel is my love.

It is Amazing though how Jewish people can stand against other Jewish activists to state what they feel is wrong. Like many white and black people can stand up and state the wrongs their own people have done or are doing. But there are some religions and regions who will follow the slaughter of innocent people just because they are dressed like them and worship the same book. Good on you the concerned Jewish South African Citizens - hopefully next time a Jewish government official steps his foot off a plane on our soil he doesn't get slandered by religious freaks who are anti-Israel.

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 18:58

David, I'm not sure how you managed to read the entire news article above, and come away with the idea that the protests starting tomorrow at Regies stores are somehow "anti-Jewish"?

      David - 2012-11-03 19:13

Braddo most SA Jews (99%) are behind Israel because Israel is a homeland for the Jews and more importantly the lack of peace in that region is not Israel's fault. Israel would jump at the chance for true peace. The point I am making is that many retail businesses are Jewish owned and the owners are also pro Israel. Dischem, Baby City, Pick N Pay, Cape Union Mart, Clicks, Woolworths etc.

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 19:32

I think you confuse Judaism with Zionism. In any event, Jewish people are not some mindless mass of people who all think alike. Jewish South Africans even less so. I cant think of one Jewish person I know who would willingly support the massive violation of human rights perpetrated by the JNF, simply because they are Jewish. There are many Jews all over the world who find Zionisn abhorrent. This doesnt make them less Jewish. In fact, it makes them More Jewish.

      David - 2012-11-03 20:08

Braddo you are disingenuous. As Martin Luther King said anyone who is anti Zionistic is anti Semitic.

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 20:44

Martin Luther-King ey? Now, if you could prove the existence of such a quote, I would be most-impressed. This supposed "open letter" is a fairytale which has popped up from time to time amongst zionists trying to justify their "right" to land which ended up being in the Middle-East. Before that South America was discussed, and Adolf Hitler even signed off on Madagascar in 1938

      David - 2012-11-03 20:48

You seem to have liked Adolph's idea hey Braddo. Not surprising because you are the racist b

      David - 2012-11-03 21:10

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 21:54

Yeah, Hiltler was a cool dude with a mustache way before it's time. Actually your logic is way ahead of me. how you get to pluck "you seem to like Hitler" out of nothing is so awesome ! Inasfar as your Maartin-luther King "gem", I need to convey to you the crushing news that Google is a friend to "anti-semites" like me too, and I know what the word "attributed to" means. It means sucked out of a Zionists bum to suit an agenda. Goodness only knows what the Reverend actually said, and in which context. Oh, and neither do you.

  • davidrobertlewis - 2012-11-03 17:34

In theory, South Africa has freedom of religion, in practice, Jews are an oppressed minority. My case against Media24 is just one example of the problem we find ourselves in. I therefore no longer have the luxury of taking a side in the Israel-Palestinian conflict. My position has been predetermined for me by the same corrupt politicians who blame Jews for South Africa's economic problems.

  • braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 18:12

For years South African Jews have supported the JNF through their Small Blue Box projects, where Jewish children were encouraged to :"support the growing of forests in Israel. In reality, the Israeli authorities remove bedouins and Palestinian people from an area, and the JNF plant forests to prevent the villagers from rebuilding. It's really quite shameful.

      David - 2012-11-03 19:18

Braddo you speak out of your behind. And actually we support Israel because we want to know we have a safe haven to go to if anti Semites like you rule the countries we reside in.

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 20:11

Ah, the "anti-semite" epithet . Tossed in so early? I am almost disappointed. Do you know what a "semite" is? If you did, you would know that the European Jews who were given the land previously under British mandate, are the furthest removed from that definition. The descendants of the Phoenicians and Akkadians are ironically-enough, closer to the present-day Palestinians and Arabs. So, no, I'm not at all Anti-Arab or Anti-Palestinian. (I am anti-bullsh8t though, but I'm sure you can see by my smile) The artificial creation of Israel in 1948 is "the other day" compared to 7000 yr old civilizations like Damascus. I know your next retort is going to involve some fantasy about some chosen people, even though most of the Jewish people currently living in the stolen Palestine are European Ashkenazim, not some tribe foolishly walking around after Moses, losing their way so dramatically that they tripped over "Israel" suddenly in 1948.

      David - 2012-11-03 20:29

Braddo. I'll take you to a challenge. I guarantee you that an Ashkenazi Jew from any country in the world has a genetic link to any Sephardic from any country in the world. It is a proven fact. And it makes sense because all Jews wether Ashkenazi or Sephardic are originally from the holy land. That is where our origin is. And btw you are an anti Semite because you seek to deny Jews the right to their own homeland. Like I said earlier. Martin Luther King said anyone who is anti Zionistic is an anti semite.

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 21:05

Labeling detractors as "anti-zionists" is an old zionist trick designed to shut up those whom they can't bullsh&t into submission. So, feel free to call me a murderer of little puppy-dogs if you wish. It only points to the bankruptcy of your argument. It's like questioning the holocaust facts. If you agree that 6 million jews died in Hitler's concentration camps, then hey, you're an ok dude. If you happen to believe that 5 million, 999 thousand jews were killed, then you're a "holocaust-denier. If you point out that scientists did various tests after WWII with the gas alleged to have been used in gas-chambers, and ruled out that it could kill anything but lice, then you're some heretic Jew-basher. Yeah, riiight.

      David - 2012-11-03 21:14

Cut the crap Braddo. Let us ask you straight - do you believe that Jews have a right to a Jewish homeland in Israel, living side by side with a sovereign Palestinian state? Do you believe in a two state solution? If not tough luck because us Jews aren't going to be bullied anymore.

      braddo.ct - 2012-11-03 21:59

A 2-state solution? Well I actually believe in a no-state solution, but reluctantly we have to concede that a 2-state solution is the most practical going ahead, morphing into a single state later.

      David - 2012-11-03 22:06

There is no need for anything to morph. If that I'd the case the Palestinians can morph back to Jordan and Egypt.

The peace loving Israel does not want to sign up to the International Criminal Court, Implement UN Resolutions, Allow Nuclear weapons inspectors etc, etc. Would love to see the day that the Palestinians are allowed to arm themselves to the tee, to stop the bullying ethnic cleansing Israeli racists. They are much worse that our verkrampte volk back in the day. Guess that is never gonna happen because it has the USA in it's back pocket. Just look at any US election, all presidential candidates have to sing the praises of Israel, otherwise there's financial hell to pay!! Israels decides who becomes the US President, the official elections is just a side-show to make it legitimate.

  • piet.boerie - 2012-11-04 00:36

Just under half of all Israelis and 2/3 of live abroads support peace and not occupation yet we only hear of the right wing racists point of view who are supported and funded by the Rothchilds. So its about time that we deniers of the expanded aparthied milatary state are given the chance of making our point. The plans have been laid for Jersulaem as the world capital and all Jews abd LA's return home to the expanded state. This expanded state includes occupied land. So its about half that support peace and the return to the internationally recognised borders and another half who have no issues tearing up peoples farms and the proccxy war which justifies thier milatant action. So as long as the Plaestians use violence to fight occupation and repression does it given reason to the Israeli state to push them off thier heritage land.

      piet.boerie - 2012-11-04 01:03

Israel recieves $3.1billion in milatary aid a year. Israel is the 7th largest arms supplier in the world of sale of $9.9 billion. Besides China, in Africa Israel suppplies weapons to dictators and sponsors paramilataires where their are blood diamonds. Israel is the largest supplier of Blood Diamonds. Total direct aid to Israel is $113.8554 billion. Conservative Jews and rich banking families all are obliged to give Israel money. This is estimated at $2billion a year which believe it or not is tax dedcutable. Why does American Presidents and the super wealthy keep giving Israel money when its bankrupt? Why does the US fawn over a country whose people only make up 0.01% of the US population. Surely Mexicans or the Irish are more in numbers? Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. aid, money that could be used on US citizens struggling in a GFC bought upon them by the Bankers who are Israeli supporters. So peace will never happen as long as the US and its right to veto in the UN and the US government is controlled by the Bankers who openly suppport Jersualem as the new world capital. The good thing is finally we as loving Jews are starting to vocalise more and get more media air time. Not on Fox of course.

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-11-07 21:25

zubair.khan, what you and millions of other conveniently forget is that the Jews had their own land, it was called Canaan. The borders of Canaan are almost the exact borders of Israel as it is today. The Jews built Jerusalem 1000's of years ago, they were forced to give up their land by the muslims. Why is it so difficult to accept that the Jews have as much right as the Palestinians and every other nation to have it's own country, where they can live and prosper without fear. The other thing most people like to ignore is that the arab countries surrounding Israel don't exactly want the Palestinians in their countries either, even though they are muslims. Would you care to hazard a guess as to why that may be?
