Air show plane crash shocks spectators

Johannesburg - Eyewitnesses have told of their shock at seeing a plane crash and burst into a ball of flames during an air show in Klerksdorp on Saturday.

Beeld reported that Gianfranco Cicogna Mozzoni, 49, died in front of thousands of people who had come to see the air show.

One eyewitness said the plane was flying low and seemed to tilt to one side. “The next moment there was just smoke and flames!”

An elderly woman who saw the accident had a heart attack and was taken to hospital. She was in a stable condition.

“It is an incredibly awful thing,” said Barbara Botha, who stood nearby and saw everything.
“Everyone saw it. Everyone, including my children, are in a state”.

Mozzoni flew in formation with Charles Urban when the accident happened.

Urban said afterwards that his friend had died doing what he loved. “There was an incredible passion for flying in him.”

Mozzoni’s wife was seen on the scene shortly after the accident, slowly walking around the crashed plane, stopping to pick up and look at bits of the wreckage. The couple had two children who were not at the air show.

marlin jy is n absolute kompleet idioot. i was there also, and, like my sister, i also saw the people there. everybody was shocked, but stayed calm enough to let the emergency teams actually do their work. but what were we supposed to do? go running around like you see the americans do in similar videoclips? so you would have approved of mass histeria and more death and carnage than what we witnessed? you should have a damn lobotomy since you dont need your frontal cortex

Truly Sargon, how can you judge others? This pilot was truly a nice person who helped a child's dream come true! My son was with him in his aircraft 3 weeks ago. You are truly an idiot! No one is perfect.
