Johannesburg - North West chairperson Supra Mahamupelo is calling for the term of ANC president and country president to be realigned.

This comes at a time when it is believed that a group within the ruling party is lobbying for a third term for President Jacob Zuma.

However, Mahamupelo has denied that this had anything to do with a third term for Zuma.

"The ANC may go to a conference and emerge with a president different from the one in government, democratically so.

"But the problem is there is an elevation of political risk, can the ANC afford such a risk? I don't think so," he said on the sidelines of the party's National General Council in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Risk of uncertainty

There was a two year gap between the ANC's elective conference and the country's general elections.

In the two years between the two there was a risk of uncertainty over who was actually leading the country.

"When you have the conference of the ANC happening before the general elections, and the constitution of the ANC says the president of the ANC shall become the president of the republic, there is a contradiction," Mahamupelo said.

He added that if the ANC constitution was to be applied immediately after the party's elective conference it would mean that the new party president would have to become president of the country.

"So we saying we need to correct that because it causes a bit of a challenge for the country and for the conference.

"People confuse it with a third term. There is no way we are mentioning president Jacob Zuma, we are raising it as a matter of principle."

He said the country needed certainty and predictability.

Zuma 'won't stand'

According to the Mail & Guardian, Zuma on Saturday said he would "never ever" stand for a third term as party president.

"Even if they beg me I won't stand," he told the publication.

Aligning the two elections was a resolution taken at the North West provincial conference held in February.

Mahamupelo said his province's suggestion would be debated in 2017.

If the resolution was adopted and implemented, it would mean that the term of the collective leadership elected in 2017 would be extended to 2022.
