Johannesburg – Limpopo police on Wednesday arrested a gang who allegedly robbed and kidnapped hitchhikers along the N1.

One of their victims spotted them on the road and followed them to Musina, spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said in a statement.

He called police, who arrested four men and a woman at their accommodation. Two more alleged members of the gang were arrested later. Police confiscated a car and a Toyota Quantum minibus.

They tried to fool police by claiming they were members of the Hawks, busy with an investigation, Otto said.

“Indications are that the suspects can be linked to several cases of armed robbery along the N1, especially on foreign victims. Investigations to link them to cases of abduction of people along the border... are also ongoing.”

The seven will appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of armed robbery.
