Johannesburg - An alleged hijacker was shot and wounded by police, while one of his accomplices was arrested in Kagiso near Krugersdorp on Monday, police said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said the flying squad reacted to a robbery and a hijacking when they spotted three men in a silver Volkswagen Polo.

Makhubela said the men fired shots at the flying squad and police returned fire.

"One suspect was shot and injured as they lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall," Makhubela said.

He said goods from an alleged robbery were found in the back of the car, along with a firearm.

The injured man was taken to hospital and was under police guard. One of the men ran away, and another was arrested.
