Johannesburg - A man was arrested after being shot by police during a housebreaking in Soweto on Wednesday morning, police said.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele said a woman called police while three men were trying to break into her house and police responded immediately.

"The woman was inside her house and when police arrived, [the] suspects were still busy breaking [into] the house to gain access."

Upon noticing the police the intruders fled, firing shots. Police returned fire and one man was shot and wounded.

He was taken to a local hospital and will appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon on charges of housebreaking and attempted murder.

The other two men were still being sought, Makhubele said.
