Johannesburg - A man was arrested for excessive speeding on the N1 south by the Rivonia Road offramp on Sunday, metro police said.

"The high speed unit of the JMPD arrested a man on a motorcycle at midday for travelling at 179km/h without a number plate on the rear of his motorcycle," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"290 other motorists were caught on camera travelling above the speed limit of 120km/h."

The man was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

So, another fund raising day by the road vultures, I wonder what they use the "fine" money for, must disappear into their very deeep pockets, for what use?

      fredster.mania.5 - 2012-10-01 08:50

So you agree that breaking the law is OK?

      adrien.mcguire - 2012-10-01 09:23

@Jeffrey What a pathetic statement. What we need in this country is the rule of law, not idiots that condone lawbreaking. You should be embarrassed about your comment !

      jody.beggs - 2012-10-01 11:43

As soon as all people are treated the same then I will comply with the law. But when the government has free rein over blue lights and our f%^en tax money , more than 5 billion stolen , why the hell should anyone follow the rules ! Why are some animals more equal than others ? Damn the man.

179km/ph is easy to do on a superbike. He must have been in second gear.

  • andy.zondi - 2012-09-30 23:28

I'm so sick of these fines, taxis r still crashn, buses, trucks still dominate road accident statistics, speed cameras aren't working...wats the point of buyin a lambo if I can't test it out abit? Its maddening

      jody.beggs - 2012-10-01 11:44

Soft targets , taxis kill cops , bikers don't ...

  • brionyl.french - 2012-10-01 05:16

Good idiots like this cause hoirrific accidents!!!

      breinlekkasie.dodelikegif - 2012-10-01 06:47

Here is a thought, did you know that you are just as likely to be involved in an accident when you are driving slower than the average traffic then when you drive faster than the average traffic.

      arthur.salvado - 2012-10-01 07:20

If you haven't ridden a bike, you won't understand . It's not that I condone speeding but wow, 179ks is almost crawling on a superbike. Now, be nice.

I've got no problem with real speed enforcement where necessary to bring down the road death rate. I'm not a speedster, but even for me this seems to be just revenue collection. Speed trap on busy days (not Sundays when roads tend to be open and much safer), choose the hazardrous sections, trap in bad weather (not only when u can have a burger in the shade) etc. More importantly target unroadworthy cars, taxi's, buses and trucks. Finally (and for me most importantly) tackle the pedestrians who somehow think they have right of way on national freeways.

On Saturday on the Jhb/Pta freeway I must have seen two dozen of these fools setting up cameras. Who cares if people are speeding on a freeway? That's what a freeway is for. But THEY were running across the freeway carrying cameras and causing people to brake violently. The one near Rivonia caused a huge backup of traffic and dangerous "panic braking". They should be trapping the speeders near schools and high accident zones, not the easy-revenue freeways where few accidents occur.

So wen are the Metro police going to start arresting jaywalkers? They are responsible for 40% of the deaths on your roads!

      mike.bundy.73 - 2012-10-01 07:57

Technically, except for freeways, it's not illegal to walk in the road.

179km/h on a motorcycle should only be done on a track - lock the ass up and throw away the key. As a motorcyclist myself, i find it more and more difficult to contend with traffic because of such idiots - motorists has no more patience with motorcyclists because of such behaviour.

Your ten cents worth is worth nothing tool....

I would fit a lazer detector or some sort of divice on my Bike if i was going to do that kind of speeds. Removing no. plate is like telling everyone you're goint to klap the 200's somewhere somehow.

Ouch - The courts are going to be busy. Hope the magistrate had a good weekend

What about idiots in the fast lane driving way under the speed limit? Some (or a lot of) people might not have important places to be, but there are people who want / have to get to where they want / have to be. Slow pokes in the fast lane are just a waste of time and space. I quess the metropolice are collecting for their Christmas bonuses...
