Cape Town - Reports on Tuesday have indicated that Economic Freedom Fighters MP Andile Mngxitama has been suspended from the EFF for bringing the party into disrepute.

The EFF has been at the centre of factional battles recently, after Mngxitama threatened to give a media briefing on alleged misuse of funds by the party’s leadership last week.

Mngxitama was notified of his suspension in a late night email on Monday, EWN tweeted on Tuesday.

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi would not comment when contacted by News24, and said a statement would be released on Tuesday.

Mngxitama was due to give another press briefing on Tuesday after his failed attempt last week, with reports indicating the briefing will still go ahead despite his suspension.

Party MP Khanyisile Tshabalala has also been suspended.

Last week, Mngxitama had to be escorted out of the Cape Sun Hotel, Cape Town, on Thursday, where he had intended holding a press conference ahead of the state-of-the-nation address.

Fights reportedly broke out between EFF members and Mngxitama's supporters. The EFF members refused to leave the venue and said they wanted to hear what Mngxitama had to say.

"Serious decisions will be taken about him, because we have reached a point where we cannot tolerate ill-discipline," Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema told reporters on Friday after the incident.

The party also accused Mngxitama of trying to sow divisions within the EFF with the help of businessman Kenny Kunene.
