Cape Town - Vinod Hindocha, whose daughter, Anni, was murdered while on honeymoon in South Africa in 2010, is recovering in a Swedish hospital after his right arm was ripped off during an industrial accident.

The Mirror reported that Hindocha, who is an engineer, was fixing a lift when a chain slipped and the lift cage he was standing in fell to the ground. His arm was extended outside the cage at the time, and was severed just below the shoulder. He reportedly recalled looking up at his severed limb a floor above.

He was rushed to hospital in Gothenburg, where surgeons spent 13 hours reattaching his limb.

Recovered movement

The Daily Mail reported that Hindocha, 65, has recovered movement in his elbow and some warmth in his fingers, but doctors say it will be 18 months before they can assess the full extent of the damage.

Hindocha's wife, Nilam, had gone shopping while he repaired the faulty lift on 3 March and was waiting to meet him for lunch when the accident happened. She is in remission from stomach cancer.

Hindocha's brother, Asok, told The Mirror that Vinod is a fighter, and is positive, which has helped him. He's a good person who has been through so much, he added.

The accident comes just months after his daughter Anni's husband, Shrien Dewani, was acquitted of charges relating to her murder in Cape Town in November 2010.

Hindocha is about to release a book, Anni: A Father's Story, in which he recounts his ordeal following her murder.
