Johannesburg - Community members have assisted police in catching an awaiting-trial prisoner who escaped along with six others from the Lenasia Magistrate's Court earlier this month.

Romeo Beukes was caught on Sunday, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

"He was pointed out by members of the community in Eldorado Park," Dlamini said.

Beukes faced a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances. He would now face an additional charge of escaping from custody.

The group allegedly overpowered police officers at the holding cells of the court and broke the main door to make their escape.

They were appearing for crimes committed in Lenasia, Eldorado Park and Ennerdale.

The first three suspects were re-arrested within 24 hours of their escape.

Brendon Paul and Luvesh Veerasmy were found in Lenasia while Mpho Ramatsoale was arrested at Ennerdale.

"They had gone back to their homes [after the escape]," Dlamini said at the time.

The fourth suspect, Leroy Johnson was arrested last week in Eldorado Park after community members gave police a tip-off about his whereabouts.

Two other suspects, Dumisani Selepe and Thabiso Sebelwane are still at large.
