Johannesburg - Nineteen people have been arrested after a minibus transporting miners was torched on Tuesday night along the R555, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

This is the fifth vehicle to be set alight this week, with four trucks petrol bombed on the road since Monday.

Spokesperson Ronel Otto said nobody was injured but those arrested will be charged with malicious damage to property.

This was in addition to 52 people arrested since Monday for public violence after two taverns were set alight.

On Monday, residents woke up to warnings that some people in Mampuru had blockaded the R555 in the area, which is near a number of mines, and had set a truck alight.

Later on Monday police issued a warning that the R555 at Burgersfort was blocked by the burning truck.

Motorists were advised to avoid the road, or to drive carefully and not stop for hitchhikers.

On Wednesday in Burgersfort six people were arrested on charges of malicious damage to property after a truck was set alight on Tuesday night on the R555. Nobody was injured.

The protests were thought to be about promises not being kept over building a new road in the area. One mine said that although none of their staff was injured, some are battling to get to work.

The road was cleared on Wednesday and extra police had been sent to the area, said Otto.
