Anti-crime operation nets 199 suspects in Joburg

Johannesburg - Almost 200 people have been arrested around central Johannesburg for crimes including murder, hijacking, armed robbery, illegal gambling, domestic violence, theft and drunken driving.

The 199 suspects were arrested during a crime-combating operation which started on Friday and ended on Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said in a statement the suspects were arrested in Mondeor, Booysens, Moffat View, Langlaagte, Fairlands, Sophiatown, Brixton and the Johannesburg Central area.

“Twelve suspects were arrested for common robbery, three for car hijacking, seven for rape, six for attempted murder. One was arrested for murder, nine for possession of unlicensed firearms, four for armed robbery, three for theft out of motor vehicle, two for house robbery, two for business robbery, 35 for drunk driving, 31 for possession of drugs and 51 for shoplifting.”

He said some suspects were arrested for offences including common possession of stolen property, illegal gambling, intimidation, fraud and pointing a firearm.

“Most of the suspects will appear in the various Magistrate's Courts around the Johannesburg area tomorrow [Monday]," Mbele said.
