Cape Town - Residents of the Cape Flats are set to protest outside Parliament on Tuesday to demand security and freedom from gangsterism.

Community leader Ricardo Sedres, who is also leader of the Social Democratic Party, said he had organised the protest in his personal capacity.

“We decided to get together because of the ongoing killing of people,” he said, adding that a memorandum would be handed over.

A notice on the protest said residents’ rights to human dignity and respect were being violated, because they could not move freely.

Sedres could not estimate how many people would be in attendance but said he hoped the cool weather did not keep people away.

People from Hanover Park, Mitchells Plain, Manenberg and other areas were set to take part.

Less than a kilometre away, alleged 28's gang leader George "Geweld" Thomas was appearing in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday morning after being found guilty last week of killing seven people.
