Johannesburg - A gang of armed robbers shot and killed a 36-year-old police officer in Vosloorus on Wednesday morning, Gauteng police said.

"The police were conducting normal sector policing at Vosloorus Crossing Mall, monitoring the opening of the shops, when they noticed the suspects came out from one of the shops after committing an armed robbery," said Major Mack Mngomezulu.

A shoot-out ensued between police and the group.

"Other suspects came from behind [and] shot and killed a policeman," Mngomezulu said.

The group fled the scene in two cars.

No arrests have been made.
