Pretoria - A heavily armed gang has attacked a police car transporting two men suspected of killing a police officer in Pretoria, and managed to free the suspects. The brazen escape occurred shortly after the men appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court in connection with the shooting of a police officer.Eyewitnesses at the scene said a group of five heavily armed men stopped the police van less than a kilometre from the court and disarmed the officers before helping two men escape. One man was carrying an AK47 assault rifle while another man had an R5 and the other three were carrying pistols."A red vehicle was travelling in the opposite direction and they stopped the police van. Five men carrying guns jumped out of the car and ordered the two officers to lie on the ground. One man then went to the back of the van and opened the door," said the witness. The two suspects, Abraham Mothomba and Sibusiso Bethel Phuti fled on foot.Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng confirmed the incident, saying the five men were driving a maroon sedan. No one was injured in the incident."We are appealing to the community to assist us with information," Mofokeng said.He however warned the public not to approach the suspects, but to immediately contact the police. The 37-year-old off duty constable was in his car last week in Jeffsville informal settlement in Atteridgeville when two men and a woman approached him and shot him before fleeing. He later died at the Kalafong hospital.
