Durban - A guard who rushed towards the blaring siren of an alarm in Glenwood was ambushed by a heavily-armed gang of robbers on Monday morning.

The guard had interrupted a robbery at a church in the suburb, and was stripped of his firearm before the gang made a swift exit.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the guard had just arrived at the property when he was confronted.

"Our armed response officer responded within a minute to an alarm activation and he had just arrived outside the property when a gang of armed robbers ambushed him," Jackson said.

"The armed robbers pulled out of the property driveway in two vehicles, a white Mercedes getaway car and a second stolen vehicle. One of the robbers jumped out of the passenger seat of the Mercedes and held up our officer at gunpoint and forced him to hand over his gun. It was unclear how many robbers were in the vehicles.

"Our officer, who has been highly-trained to handle such situations, responded correctly by not putting up a fight, which could have resulted in a shoot-out in the residential area with possible injury or tragedy. We have handed over crucial information to the police who are now investigating the case."

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that detectives from Umbilo had registered cases of theft of motor vehicle and armed robbery.

He said that no arrests had been made.
