Polokwane - Four assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition have been found in an abandoned house in Polokwane, Limpopo police said on Friday.

Following a tip-off, police found three AK-47 rifles and one R1 rifle locked up in a room of the house in Westenburg on Thursday night, Colonel Ronel Otto said.

Ammunition for various calibres of firearms, a machine used to reload spent cartridges, a bulletproof vest and several bags filled with an unknown white powder were also found.

The powder would be sent for laboratory testing.

Police had yet to determine to whom the weapons and ammunition belonged.
