Johannesburg - Contraband goods with an estimated street value of R5.2m were confiscated in Limpopo and Mpumalanga in September, the SA National Defence Force said on Tuesday.

The main items were cigarettes, clothing and fake branded running shoes, Lt-Col Piet Paxton said in a statement.

A total of 22 271 cartons of illegal cigarettes was confiscated as well as 2507 pairs of running shoes, mainly in the two provinces.

Dagga with an estimated street value of about R638 000 was also seized.

"A total number of 1414 undocumented persons, not making use of the registered ports of entry, were apprehended and handed over to the department of home affairs," Paxton said.

Six stolen vehicles and 64 people were arrested and handed over to the SA Police Service.

The SANDF deployed nearly 2500 soldiers in a border safeguarding role along the landward borders in seven of the nine provinces of South Africa.

Except for the Western Cape and Gauteng, regular as well as Reserve Force members conducted border safeguarding operations on a 24-hour basis in all the other provinces.

The operations were focused on all forms of border violations to and from South Africa's neighbouring countries, Paxton said.
