Johannesburg - A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of metro police officer Simon Mabatamela.

The man was arrested in Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon, metro police said.

Mabatamela, 60, was at the Centro Shopping Centre when he intervened in a robbery.

"JMPD [Johannesburg Metro Police Department] officers have arrested a 41-year-old man in Yeoville today [Wednesday] in connection with the murder of Mabatamela, who was shot dead during a robbery in Rosettenville on Monday, July 23," Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar told News24.

"Officers received a tip-off that the man was at a house in Alexandra Street, Yeoville, where he was arrested at about 15:00 today [Wednesday]."

The man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon, Minnaar said.

Mabatamela was on his way to withdraw cash at an ATM near the store just before 15:00 when the incident occurred.

"He walked right into it, he didn't even get a chance to draw his firearm," Minnaar said at the time.

Security guards had just collected money from a Pick n Pay store when they were targeted.

The officer, who was in full uniform, wrestled with one of the robbers when he was shot by another suspect who was hiding behind a pillar, Minnaar said.

"When the officer fell, he was shot twice in the upper body and died on the scene."

The robbers fled the scene with the cashbox, but the money was covered in anti-theft dye, said Minnaar.
