Johannesburg - The Durban High Court is on Friday expected to sentence 3 men who killed artist Clinton de Menezes during a New Year's Eve party in 2013.

In March, Siyabonga Khoza, Lungani Ngidi, and Bongani Makhathini, were found guilty of killing the 43-year-old in the Westville home of his friends Simon and Amanda Malpas in Durban.

De Menezes helped lock Amanda, his wife Nicola and daughter Eva in the bathroom to get them out of harm's way. He was shot while trying to help Simon close the glass sliding doors to the balcony, through which the killers were trying to get in.

The three were also found guilty of housebreaking, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and one count of attempted murder. A fourth accused, Fitso Alimasi, was found guilty of receiving stolen goods from robberies the three committed in Westville.

The De Menezes family were on holiday in South Africa at the time. He was born in Johannesburg, moved to the UK in 2007, and had work exhibited in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
