Assistance for stampede victim's burial

2012-01-17 14:29

Johannesburg - Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will help with the burial of Gloria Sekwena, who died in a recent stampede at the University of Johannesburg, her office said on Tuesday.

"Mokonyane will assist the Sekwena family with various services, such as counselling and transporting the mourners to the cemetery," spokesperson Xoli Mngambi said.

"The assistance will not be in the form of money... so we cannot disclose the amount to be spent in the process."

Mngambi said the assistance would be a joint operation by Mokonyane, the Mogale City Municipality, and the West Rand District Municipality.

Sekwena, 47, will be buried on Saturday at Sterkfontein cemetery. She died in the stampede last week while accompanying her son Kgositsile, 19, to see him through the application processes.

UJ management has offered to pay for Kgositsile's studies.

this is wack and shows the interest of condolences to the young student you lost your mom and deserve to receive alot more...but however swaying of the topic. "Mokonyane will assist the Sekwena family with various services, such as counselling and transporting the mourners to the cemetery," What about Thomas Ferreira? She(Mokonyane) promised to cover the medical bills right?

      Sharon - 2012-01-17 15:12

Thomas is a white young man.........need I say more

      Moi - 2012-01-17 15:25

@Randomhero6661 - you beat me to it. I was just about to ask the same thing! It's a wonderful gesture and I'm sure that the family will really appreciate it, but what about all of those medical bills that the Ferreira family are sitting with and will be having to deal with for as long as their son lives?

      procold2 - 2012-01-17 16:01

my condolences to the sekwena family, this woman is false and if i were them i would make sure because i can see lawyers letter ending up in the sekwenas post box same as the empty promises for the ferreiras.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-01-17 16:01

If I was the deceased's family I make my own arrangements. The promise maker's track record is not very good with keeping them.

      Newsreader - 2012-01-18 08:06

she is another Brig Gen. Ms Nontobeko Mpaxa. A racist pig!

      Pontsho - 2012-01-18 12:25

Remember this is one of the many untrue promises our gov makes..... This promise also will be added to the many already made. Like the case of the five year old boy , who had both his legs amputated after a tree fell on him while he was in class. What did the gov say. "We're providing the boy''s family with counselling and other necessary support". But sadly when Kenny Kunene went there....NOTHING absolutely NOTHING was done and there was no follow up whatsoever to the matter as well. This makes me so mad!

Does Mokonyane really just want Media Attention. She failed to assist the child who was hit by Blue Light Thug at Randfontein and failed to assist the child who eventually lost both legs at school. Now why must we believe her? or does she just want them to die first and provide transport for the mourners. This premier is an embarrassment to African Culture. Lying to people who need yr help most is disgusting.

      Marietjie - 2012-01-17 15:28

Race apart, because she has to date also not offer assistance to Thomas Ferreira, seems like she is only seeking her crowning glory instead of serving gracefully and with compassion all people!

  • Andrew - 2012-01-17 15:02

Hope this is not just another empty promise as in the case of Thomas Ferreira. Nomvula Mokonyane is good on making promises but on keeping them ???.

      Newsreader - 2012-01-17 15:26

They all are!! Every single one of them. Thats why the ANC (Are Never Committed) are dragging this country into the gutter.

  • Dave - 2012-01-17 15:08

I wonder if she would have reacted as quickly had Thomas Ferreira been quickly by the thug of a driver. Catch a wake please and realise that when you open your mouth and make promises - honmour them. My thoughts and prayers are with the deceased's family - RIP.

  • SGL - 2012-01-17 15:09

Mokonyane, how about assisting Thomas Ferreira's family, as you PROMISED! But then again, the ANC don't keep their promises do they now?!

  • frans.grobler3 - 2012-01-17 15:11

What about all other people who have lost loved ones - no disrespect why the interest in this fatal - media attention "cheap shot" Eishhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Jannie - 2012-01-17 15:17

ANC is racist!what about the white kid you ran over?

  • Wikus - 2012-01-17 15:24

And what about Thomas in Krugersdorp???

  • PaasHaas - 2012-01-17 15:27

Dear Sekwena family, deepest condolences on your loss, so uneccessary, but dont hold your breath, continue with funeral arrangements as if the Premier hadnt opened her mouth.

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-01-17 15:31

Well if she does assist with all various services such as counselling and transporting of all the mourners and does not keep her promise to the Ferreira family then she is a racist and a disgrace to ministers. Her promises are worthless. She should be fired from her position. I do hope the law comes down hard on her really soon.

  • Deeteem - 2012-01-17 15:33

One day when Jesus returns to welcome the D A to power, he is going to give you ANC okies a snot klap for lying, cheating, being corrupt, breathing, etc !!

      ivan.coetzee2 - 2012-01-17 15:50

From your lips to Gods ears.

  • ivan.coetzee2 - 2012-01-17 15:48

This woman is a liar and perfect example of an ANC cadre, all about empty promises and NO delivery. The family must not pin their hope on her for anything. But alas they are probably part of the supporting masses and will suck up her lies.

  • leonie.vanwyk - 2012-01-17 15:51

And still no Aid or financial help as promised to Thomas (VIP accident) family.

  • grieta.mitchley - 2012-01-17 15:57

What about assistance for Thomas Ferreira who was knoked over by your driver minister?

  • Paddy - 2012-01-18 08:17

Yeah, right. Much like all the stuff that boy Thomas got for being run over by the Blue Light MEC.

  • Hendrik - 2012-01-18 10:12

If I was family of the deceased I would not get too excited about this offer. The self same "premier" also made all sorts of promises about assisting with massive medical bills for the kid from the West Rand. last news I saw/heard nothing had come of that promise.
