Cape Town -The number of Road Accident Fund (RAF) claims submitted by attorneys on behalf of clients dropped steeply in the past five years, according to Transport Minister Dipuo Peters.

In a written response to a parliamentary question, tabled on Tuesday, she said 9 299 claims were submitted directly to the fund last year (2012/13) by claimants.

A further 35 829 claims were submitted through an attorney.

The number of claims submitted through attorneys had dropped each year since 2008/09, after the Road Accident Amendment Act became law.

There were 157 197 such claims in that year, dropping to 73 514 in 2009/10.

The total then fell to 67 497 in 2010/11, and 39 066 in 2011/12.
