Johannesburg - A 14-year-old boy accused of killing four members of his family with an axe will appear the Benoni Magistrate's Court later this week, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the matter was postponed on Monday morning.

The boy did not appear in court.

"The suspect is still in hospital and is undergoing psychological evaluation," said Dlamini.

The matter was put off to Wednesday.

The teen allegedly hacked to death his mother, grandmother and two siblings at their home in Etwatwa on the East Rand on Friday.

His 42-year-old mother and 3-month-old sister died on the scene.

His grandmother and 7-year-old brother died in the Far East Rand Hospital.

The family was sleeping in one room when they were attacked.

The boy's two sisters, aged eight and nine, escaped and alerted neighbours.

After the crime the boy apparently ran away, but was later arrested with the help of local residents.

The motive for the attack was not known.
