Bloemfontein - A man was arrested after a taxi driver died and 15 people were injured in a head-on collision near Odendaalsrus, Free State, on Friday morning.

"According to witnesses, the driver of a BMW was travelling from Allanridge towards the direction of Odendaalsrus while a white taxi was travelling from Odendaalsrus taxi rank towards Klerksdorp," Captain Stephen Thakeng said.

"Apparently the driver of a BMW was talking with his cellular phone and lost control of the vehicle and landed in front of the oncoming taxi."

There was a head-on collision and the 48-year-old taxi driver died at the scene. His 15 passengers, including a seven-month-old baby were injured and were taken to two hospitals in Welkom.

"The 36-year-old driver of the BMW did not sustain any injury and does not have a valid driver's licence," Thakeng said.

"He was arrested at the scene, will face [a charge of] culpable homicide and will appear in Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court on the 17th December 2013."
