Johannesburg - A baby was among three people killed when a taxi overturned on the Mabopane highway on Saturday, Tshwane Metro police said.

"The left tyre of a taxi burst. The driver lost control and the vehicle overturned," said Tshwane Metro police spokesperson Louise Brits.

She said that the baby - which appeared to have been about 6-months-old - was killed, along with a man and a woman.

One person was airlifted to hospital. Five other people were being treated for serious injuries.

Three people sustained minor injuries.

And what are the cops busy with today? They are trapping BMW's and Mercs on the N1, N3 and N12. Cars with service plans and every safety device man has invented. So on and on our people get killed in these taxi death traps because our cops are busy taking bribes from the rich in German cars.

What about the smart ones driving Lexus?

Has this really got anything to do with the loss of life what vehicle one drives? It simply goes about the road worthiness of vehicles, which I am sure most would agree with, that the law enforcement officers are NOT doing enough to stop the carnage on our roads. The law in SA should be like overseas. Every motor vehicle has to go for a complete road worthy check once a year!! Yes, lately it has been mostly taxi's, but believe me, there are MANY other "lovely" vehicles on our roads which are not licensed and not roadworthy. Condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

10 million cars in South Africa and the festive death toll is already at around a 1000. There are 16 million cars in Australia and the festive death toll is on 35. The death rate is 4,500% higher in South Africa per vehicle! Go figure!

Mr Transport Minister the key word over Xmas in the road carnage is TAXI, TAXI,TAXI,TAXI,TAXI,TAXI,TAXI,TAXI

I have to agree with you: speaking to an elderly black employee of a relative of mine, he expressed fear at having to take a taxi from Pretoria to get to his family in Kroonstad. In his words "the taxi accidents are what make the statistics look bad. It is these young taxi drivers with a week-old license that kill people. They have no respect, no experience and no tolerance. They are arrogant and stupid." I wish gov would be more creative with their statistics (like with the crime that went "down"???!!) and give us a graphical breakdown of vehicles involved, vehicle age and upkeep for those, driver details, demographics on injured and deceased .. that will tell a nice story, won't it?
