Baby critical after Germiston accident

Johannesburg - A 6-month-old baby was airlifted to hospital after sustaining critical injuries in a minibus taxi accident in Germiston, paramedics said on Wednesday.

The child sustained head injuries and was placed on life support equipment, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

The driver lost control of the vehicle on the N17 near the Osborn Road exit, apparently due to a mechanical problem.

"The fully-laden taxi rolled onto its roof and landed in the middle of the highway."

Fifteen adults were taken to hospital for minor to moderate injuries. The baby was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

so many lives would be saved if we could just make safety belts mandatory in taxis.

All taxis should be removed from the roads Mr transport minister. Why arent roadblocks posted at taxi ranks checking roadworthiness of these death traps!! They talk about police visibility on the roads but continue to allow these mobile death traps to "murder" the very people that pay their wages!!!! Wake up Minister of transport-less talk and more action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"...Why arent roadblocks posted at taxi ranks checking roadworthiness of these death traps!! ..." No they won't do it because taxi drivers and owners are potential voters for the ANC ,yhey do not want to upset them

Madness our roads are a death trap - there has just been a huge accident on the N3 into PMB - I could hear it happen from my home in Montrose no idea about injuries but judging by the sound of the collision which lasted some 8 seconds it could be very serious - sirens all over the place.

Was wondering the other day if there are taxi's with baby seats? It's frightening how many people drive without them. Willing to donate my old one rather than see this happen! Hope the baby made it..

  • Lola - 2011-12-28 21:30

It should be illegal for babies and children to travel in taxis, they do not provide safe car seats and security for these little babies... RIP little one..

Again the magic word "minibus taxi". How many more people must die before something is done about them?

  • Westvaal - 2011-12-29 09:23

if the cops did their jobs and ruthlessly convicted every taxi driver for wrong doing, SARS could bring VAT down to 10%....

Taxi drivers are the worst. Apart from being atrocious drivers, they have no technical savvy and either can't detect parts breaking down, or ignore it until it breaks. That normally happens when least desired. Whatever goverment does, they should start with more rigorous checks on taxis and REMOVE those that fail from the road. Secondly, taxi drivers that do as they please should be fined TRIPLE the norm for each offence. But none of that will ever happen, I must be dreaming.

My gardener was killed in a taxi accident 2 years ago. We still mourn his loss. The taxi he traveled wasnt road worthy either. Taxi bosses are like Mafia, its all about making money
