Baby found alive in Cape Town bin

2012-04-03 18:33

Cape Town - A newborn baby was found alive in a dustbin in Table View, Cape Town at the weekend, police said on Tuesday.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the baby boy was discovered by a passerby on Cherrywood Road, Parklands on Saturday morning.

He was taken to hospital and found to be in good health.

"The baby is being kept in a safe place," Van Wyk said.

He requested the public for assistance in tracing the baby's parents.

How can people be so cruel? If you can't afford to raise a child, why have one in the first place? There are many places where you can leave the unwanted child. You're worst than an animal.

      Godfrey.Goofy85 - 2012-04-03 19:06

As long as da baby iz stil alive, GOD is gud al da tym. The owner of da baby wil b arrested!!!

...and despite all the alternatives, people still do terrible things like this. Maybe, just maybe, people don't have access to the information that they need. Living in an urban area doesn't automagically mean you know where to go or what to do. Our 1st response is always in our own context which is influenced by our knowledge and experience. Not everyone has the same context/experience. To dredge up an old saying "don't judge until you've walked a mile in someone else's shoes".

      Frans - 2012-04-03 20:13

I never compared her cruelty to that of an animal. Purely the fact that she put her child in a dustbin. Some animals do "throw" away there babies. If she didn't know a place to leave the baby, why not put it on someone's doorstep. That would be a bit more humane.

      koo.doyle - 2012-04-04 08:27

Saying 'worse than an animal' implies that animals are somehow bad. Animals do not behave like this. They don't murder, rape, abuse. You comment is an insult to animals.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-04-04 11:07

I agree, Frans. My hens peck any chick that doesn't viable to death. I have had dogs that ate their pups in the stress of birth. Every potential mother is unique, whether human or animal. What makes these mothers' cruel, is that they have many choices, but they choose to throw their babies in dustbins.

Godfrey - did your god remove your brain, or wern't you issued with one ?

There are so many "things"in this country calling themselves human!!! They breed without a thought for the unborn life they carry-yes breed! No one who is a human being with a conscience would do this! I hope they find you, sterilize you and lock you away forever!

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:10

Basic rule of nature that Africa has never learnt: "If you breed like flies you must die like flies". Death from rampant disease and starvation is coming to ZA, just like it did in the rest of Africa. This attitude of "it's my culture" needs to be stopped.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-04-03 19:23

Oh ! You are from South Africa? You have such a wonderful social structure! If only the whole world can follow your concept of Ubuntu! You must be very proud of your country!

      Rodney - 2012-04-04 01:37

You must be a moron of the first class coming up with a comment like that. You never heard of China, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh? You never heard of all those countries killing baby girls? or in Cinas case, both boys and girls as a state sanctioned practice? must be nice to be so braindead like you, oblivious to the rest of the world.

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-04-04 06:39

I see, Rodney. So it is O.K... Ubuntu everywhere. Or are we just a little behind the rest of the world?

      koo.doyle - 2012-04-04 08:29

This problem is hardly unique to South Africa. Nevermind the baby girls killed in China, or the children crippled by their parents in India and sent out to beg, you read about babies dumped in dustbins in the US and UK too. Think before you open your ignorant mouth you eejit.

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-04-04 08:56

Ain't life wonderful? Because babies are dumped in garbage cans and toilets all over the world, I am promoted to a braindead moron and an ignorant eejit.

      Rob - 2012-04-04 09:02

Rodney: It may be difficult for many to accept but the bar in SA has been set by its past, and although a much of society may be coming from a 3rd world mind-set or worse, a fairly large minority is not. It does no good at all trying to drag everyone down to the lowest common denominator, much better to set standards at a reachable higher level. Failure to do that will compromise/negate the advances and advantages available to SA from its historical association with the developed world.

      koo.doyle - 2012-04-04 09:56

No, its because you imply that this problem occurs only in SA, and proceed to dis our country - or are you incapable of understanding the drivel you wrote?

  • Shadipity - 2012-04-03 19:23

"Nature has got it all wrong: When you are younger, it should be harder to get pregnant, and as you get older it should be easier. When you are so ready, you can’t do it to save your life. And when you are 21, you are so not ready, but you are ripe as could be. The eggs should become more developed the older you get, not die slowly from the day you’re born. That’s one thing God got wrong." – Halle Berry

    mmmmmmmmmmm cape townians

      Deidré - 2012-04-03 20:29

This happens everywhere in the world, why not focus on the real problem and stop these things from happening rather than making a stupid comment like this!!!

  • Bruce - 2012-04-03 21:32

I would like to know what the authorities will do if the mother is found. Give the baby back to her? Surely not! Charge her with child abandonement or whatever, but do not give the baby to her to care for!

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:20

Too many babies are concieved as a result of rape or coercion. The girls are usually incapable of looking after themselves, let alone another being. Implantation of contrceptive devices should be manditory for all those without the financial means to support offspring.

  • Nerina Truter Smith - 2012-04-03 22:19

not long ago a house was set up in the Table View area where a person can put a baby in a whole in the wall The moment the baby is in a alarm goes off and the baby's in safe hands. This is at least the best the mother can do if she dont want him. But thank God, He have a purpose for this baby. The baby is still alive. An angel protected him.

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:24

So, your 'god' allows unwanted babies. He would rather have children die from hunger and disease than not exist at all. You are a naive idiot. This is also another bit of evidence as to why god does not exist.

  • Fawzia - 2012-04-04 00:03

Hello , how about a radical solution, hysterectomies & vasectomies for such heartless , animalistic, (sorry even animals are better, they care for their young) behaving women & men, no need to think or rethink , the radical medical measures.

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:28

Manditory sterilization is a good idea on the surface, but violates basic rights. What one needs is a contraceptive implant that can be removed if financial circumstances improve.

  • Oom - 2012-04-04 01:24

What the hell is happening to our world??

      Thandekile Pokolo - 2012-04-04 08:44

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:30

Wrong question. Each age has it's own set of problems. This age's problems are due to overpopulation. WHich age would you prefer to live in; now or (say) 500 years ago ?

  • sandimzilikazi - 2012-04-04 08:20

why are they even bothering with tracing the baby's parents!! poor nunu, I hope he get's a home full of warmth and love

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:32

WHile I will agree with your sentiments towards this infant, there are limited resources available, and we are encouraging more unwanted pregnancies.

  • Lanka - 2012-04-04 08:37

I am sorry for raising such a controversial subject, but I cannot keep myself from considering the fact that, if this woman tried to kill her baby a mere six months ago there would have been absolutely no public outcry, in fact, it would have been considered responsible famlily planning, and generally making South Africa a better place.... It would have been exactly the same life, the same potential in a little human being. I guess it all boils down to your view on when life starts, and, because no-one can say for certain, everyone needs to decide this for themselves, which is why there is such is difference between science, law and religion on this. Sadly, to the poor baby it does often not make a huge difference if your mom wants to kill you before or just after you are born. Perhaps the mom deserves our sympathy as well, we do not know the full story. Sometimes the world just seem like a sad, sad place.

      nicolene.kotze1 - 2012-04-04 11:40

i get what you're saying, but if i had heard aboout it, i would have "cried out". abortion is also murder. if you don't want a child, use contraceptives. condoms and the pill are freely available at clinics around SA. don't murder your child because you were irresponsible. there are so many people who can't have children and some people just trow theirs away?! that's the tragic truth, and it's horrible. people who do that, don't have conciences and deserve to go to hell for their sins.

      koo.doyle - 2012-04-04 12:41

Nicole take your preaching and stick it, you do NOT get to tell people they deserve to go to hell. Yes, contraceptives are there, but NOTHING is 100% effective. Personally, I'm against more children being brought into this world, who's parents cannot afford to feed and educate them. There are already too many unwanted children in our orphanages, and its better to terminate while still a clump of cells, than bring an unwanted child that will suffer neglect into this world. And its consciences btw.

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:34

Nicolene, for some, just trying to get to a clinic to get 'the pill' is a major (and expensive) task.

  • Hazel - 2012-04-04 08:43

ag please Andile it is not only cape is happening all over south africa.....

  • lephoil - 2012-04-04 12:51

people r just exercising their SA democratic rights; what is the difference between this and abortion?

      Mary - 2012-04-17 11:36

So. a bullet in the head at age 30 is little more than "post term" abortion ? Ideal solution to our crime problem.
